Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread
They really wasted Ian McShane in that movie. He should have been maiming/killing folks off left and right. All he ever got to be was an old softy. It was the biggest letdown of the film I'd say.
:::Slight Spoilers:::
Penelope had a great look, but wasn't able to hit her stride with that character. For such a major plot point as to whether she was actually Blackbeard's daughter, the writing was way too wishy washy. When Sparrow comes to the conclusion that she's conning him, it probably should have ended there. It seemed a desperate attempt to one up Jack when she reasserted her lineage later on in the film. I know she had great chemistry with Depp in Blow, so I chalk it up to lazy or fearful writing.
:::End of Spoilers:::
At this stage in the game in the franchise, anyone who approaches future projects knows it's a Depp vehicle. If OST is any indication, Jack's character will not be seriously challenged in any way and the action sequences will resemble bad musical numbers without the singing (for that at least I am thankful). I think it's high time we actually get to see him captain the Black Pearl for the majority of the movie. It's like everytime we see him on a ship it's as a passenger. He needs to prove to audiences that he can captain a ship successfully (without a mutiny or getting it stolen). That being said, he may have acted himself into a corner with his characterization so far.
Oh, and Ponce De Leon wasn't a decrepit old man when he died. He was in his mid forties. Would have been better if the missionary turned out to be Ponce himself.
This whole script for this movie was just bad and boring, then combine that with a director who has no experience in action and you get this movie, still some what enjoyable (only to the fans though l think).
Black Beard is supposed to be the most feared pirate yet he was boring and nothing scary about him, Davey Jones was 10 times meaner.
