Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

This whole script for this movie was just bad and boring, then combine that with a director who has no experience in action and you get this movie, still some what enjoyable (only to the fans though l think).

Black Beard is supposed to be the most feared pirate yet he was boring and nothing scary about him, Davey Jones was 10 times meaner.

They really wasted Ian McShane in that movie. He should have been maiming/killing folks off left and right. All he ever got to be was an old softy. It was the biggest letdown of the film I'd say.

:::Slight Spoilers:::

Penelope had a great look, but wasn't able to hit her stride with that character. For such a major plot point as to whether she was actually Blackbeard's daughter, the writing was way too wishy washy. When Sparrow comes to the conclusion that she's conning him, it probably should have ended there. It seemed a desperate attempt to one up Jack when she reasserted her lineage later on in the film. I know she had great chemistry with Depp in Blow, so I chalk it up to lazy or fearful writing.

:::End of Spoilers:::

At this stage in the game in the franchise, anyone who approaches future projects knows it's a Depp vehicle. If OST is any indication, Jack's character will not be seriously challenged in any way and the action sequences will resemble bad musical numbers without the singing (for that at least I am thankful). I think it's high time we actually get to see him captain the Black Pearl for the majority of the movie. It's like everytime we see him on a ship it's as a passenger. He needs to prove to audiences that he can captain a ship successfully (without a mutiny or getting it stolen). That being said, he may have acted himself into a corner with his characterization so far.

Oh, and Ponce De Leon wasn't a decrepit old man when he died. He was in his mid forties. Would have been better if the missionary turned out to be Ponce himself.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I think Penelope will be better in the next one considering the ending of this one.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

So sad that I missed out on Davy Jones :(
I wonder if they make him again?

I'd be totally stoked if they made him!

I agree with all this. I'm sure the next two movies will happen. we need a good adventure (OST was not). Jack needs to have the Black pearl and be the captain, another scary mean villian and good supporting cast to be around jack. If they do another two they need to do it right and then have an end, because these movies can't continue wothout getting old and payed out. I say they do two more as one story (like two and three) and then that is it.

The next film will be a flop unless they really put some good work into it. Less CGI/3D, more quality writing and directing or else they won't make their money back.

It might be neat for one of the founding fathers to make a cameo as a young man. If the real age of the actor who played George II (Richard Griffiths, 64) is any indication as to the exact time that OST takes place, it would be around 1747. That means good ol' George Washington is a spritely 16 years old. He could be 20 come the next film. How could anyone resist a chance to throw him in and have a release date on July 4th weekend?

How?!?

Hey! Hey! Stop monkeying around!

Unibrow FTW! Never noticed that. Whoa...

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I dont know why they are making another sequel. The ending to OST was perfect, especially that last line. All ties are tied.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

If they could erase that movie, that would be fantastic. Pretend it was all a drunken episode. Kill of Angelica. Never speak of it again.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Really? I thought this new film was better than the second and third Pirates...

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Yeah, On Stranger Tides is definitely the worst of the films in my opinion. The story was meh, and the villain was nowhere near as villainous as he could be.

"Blackbeard... the pirate all pirates fear..."

Yeah right, pirates must scare easily then.

He looked cool enough though, but when you know what Ian McShane can do, especially in Deadwood, you'll know what I mean.

Angelica wasn't a very good character either. A female wannabe Jack that just didn't work. Elizabeth was way better IMO, she had way more character development.

All in all it was a fun watch, but quite forgettable IMO. I haven't even bought it on Blu yet, which is saying something. I'll probably get a 4 movie set or something because I have the first 3 on DVD only. Time for an update.
The only really good thing that came from OST is the HT Jack DX, wich I will happily add to my collection. The only character I have ever wanted to see in DX form.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

OST is probably the most flawed of the Pirates movies from a filmmaking perspective and if you apply logic. For example, it's grey and rainy on the beach when Barbossa and company land on the beach and then suddenly cut to Jack and company in perfect sunny conditions.

That said, as a Jack Sparrow and Pirates fan, I had more fun and got more entertainment overall from OST than AWE. Thankfully I neither know Ian McShane's abilities nor Blackbeard's history and can take that character at face value, and Angelica works for me, not enough to care too much if we ever see her again but she worked well in the context of OST.

Actually, me too! I watched it on the plane on my way to Hawaii in September and quite enjoyed it. Not as swashbuckly as COTBP, but better than 2 and 3 IMO. And fitting that I watched it on the way to Hawaii as parts of the movies were filmed there! :rock

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I am trying not to read the OST info above. I just finished the first 3. 3rd one being my very least favorite. I will be seeing OST tomorrow evening, so I'll be able to read the thread then. YAY!

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I would say, 1-3 are pirates movies, 4 is a Jack Sparrow movie. Jack's the main reason I like these movies so I could looks past some of the things lacking in OST that were big in the first 3, but I do hope to see more of them in future movies, particularly action at sea, I'm sure it's costly but the sea battles were highlights of the trilogy, the maelstrom is still one of my most favorite scenes in all the movies.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

OST was by far my least favorite too. The Entity and I are on the same page, DX Jack was the best thing to come of it.

Hated Angelica and really missed the old gang. Also thought Jack wasn't very well written.

I'd love to see HT revisit the first movie for some figures but I doubt I'd get anything more from OST.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I really enjoyed OST. I thought it was a fun adventure and Angelica was an awesome character. I hope she is a staple for the rest of the movies. My only problem with OST was Blackbeard being fairly lame and also the mermaid lover subplot was really stupid.

But aside from that it was a lot of fun. It was nice to see Barbossa put into the spotlight again and it lacked all the unneeded details the second and third movie had (too much stuff going on especially the third one).

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I really liked all 4 with the 4th being my least favorite. But 1-3 were a great building up story. On the other hand I have never seen POC3 on its own but always with 1 and 2 directly before. Seeing all 3 in a row is great fun.
Further I believe I dont have really high standards when it comes to movies. :dunno
