Re: The Valve console

What is this exactly? A PC preloaded with steam? Doesn't make sense, I have steam working fine on my PC.

Re: The Valve console

Link should be fixed.
Valve calls it a console so I'll take their word for it,
But I get your point.

Re: The Valve console

^^ apparently it's aimed at console gamers who look and think "Man I'd like to play some PC games but my acer notebook sucks too much to play games and I don't have the time, money, or expertise to build a rad gaming computer". I'm console through and through. I get the benefits of PC gaming (better graphics, ability to mod, ability to upgrade hardware, etc.). I'm far too casual a gamer to care, and a lack of hard, physical media is tough for me to swallow. I hate the idea of the internets being able to "possibly" control my gaming experience. Sometimes I like to just plug in my SNES and go to town on Zelda; no game patches, online interactions, banning from servers, etc. to worry about there :)

Money shouldn't be an issue to people for building computers if they truly buy into this product. 1k you could build your self a badass computer.

Threads merged.

What did you expect from a higher end gaming PC? You need to spend at least $1000 to get something decent.

See the issue is I couldn't build one (without considerable research). I think that's the point...

This isn't worth $1,000 though, $1,000 gaming PC's are better than this

I don't dispute this at all. I was just saying as a console gamer the hours I would spend researching how to build a gaming computer would be worth so much in terms of $/hour that I'd end up spending the equivalent of $2000 to build a computer by the time I was finished. I don't understand how my XBOX works and that's how I likes it :lol

Still, seems like people buying this will be a pretty small share of the market...:dunno

Xi3 Responds to Valve Comments Regarding Piston Console
"What Valve does or doesn't do with its Steam Box will be up to them."
by Luke Reilly MARCH 13, 2013

Xi3 Corporation has issued a statement about its Piston console and its relationship with Valve Corporation.

"We reaffirm the fact that we received an investment from Valve Corporation (as we previously disclosed during the 2013 International CES trade show), and we did so with Valve's written permission," said*founder, president and CEO of Xi3 Jason A. Sullivan in the statement. "Second, we were asked to build a product specifically for Valve, and both companies showcased this product – the Piston console –*in their respective booths at CES 2013."

"Then, during a meeting with Valve at CES, Gabe Newell personally asked me that we not disclose additional information about our relationship with Valve. We have honored that request and will continue to do so."

Sullivan went on to address what he believes are some misconceptions.

"For example, the assumption of many in the media has been that Piston is the 'official' Steam Box," said Sullivan. "We've never said that and neither has Valve. That hasn't changed. But just because Valve may not 'currently' have any 'involvement with any product of (ours)' doesn't mean that such involvement won't exist in the future."

"It's also important to note that the Piston Console will allow gamers to access Steam regardless of what our relationship is or isn't with Valve. Additionally, Piston will also support a raft of other Internet-based gaming and entertainment platforms, which is more than what Valve apparently has planned for its official Steam Box. In this way, the Piston Console could be perceived as something more than just a Steam Box, which makes sense because at its core the Piston*Console is a Modular Computer that can run any operating system or application designed to run on an x86-based 64-bit computer.

"To be clear, the Piston Console will ship initially with a Windows operating system specifically because that's where the vast bulk of game software and computer gamers are today. That said, the Piston Console can also run Linux (and other operating systems), which means it can support the Linux-version of Steam.

"Contrary to Valve's vision, Xi3 believes that the way to take this to market today is to do so with a Windows OS at the core, coupled with the ability to not just get to one platform/store for games, but to get access to all game stores/platforms. Studios should have the option to go through Steam if they choose or to go direct to the end-user if they so choose. That will be the difference between Piston*and other Steam Boxes. You'll be able to access Steam if you choose, but you'll also be able to access other platforms as well –*all through the Piston*Console.

"In closing, what Valve does or doesn't do with its Steam Box will be up to them. So Gabe, it's up to you. The ball is in your court."

A Valve spokesperson clarified to IGN on March 11 that "Valve began some exploratory work with Xi3 last year, but currently has no involvement in any product of theirs."

I don't think you realize how easy it is to build a computer. It wont take hours of reasearch. Their are some great guides that explains everything in detail. Honestly the hardest part about it is trying to decide Nvidia or AMD for your video card :lol

Can you put a simple Lego set together?

If so, then you can sure build a gaming PC.

I think at $1000, this might take this out of the console market, unless of course Sony and Microsoft do something stupid and price thier next gen console close to that price (hopefully Sony learned for the last time).
