Google says the biggest flop of the year is some movie called The Promise.

Estimated Budget: $90 million
Worldwide Box Office: $8,224,288

I guess it must be because I've never heard of that one. But I meant of the usual summer fair -- the ones that are generally expected to be the big money makers.

What summer film faired worse than Covenant?

The mummy......... way way worse. Much more of a loss

It barely broke even. Has definitely not turned a profit yet

It' still playing, and has yet to be released in Japan. It's not making as much money as Fox would have hoped, but it's in no way a bomb. Dredd was a bomb, Blade Runner was a bomb, The Thing was a bomb. Alien Covenant will turn a profit.

I think it would be King Arthur.

Why WB gave it such a high budget I have no idea. No King Arthur movie has made money.

Alien: Covenant

Production Budget: $97 million
Worldwide: $231,322,473

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Production Budget: $175 million
Worldwide: $140,509,033

The Mummy

Production Budget: $125 million
Worldwide: $376,620,025

Baywatch

Production Budget: $69 million
Worldwide: $153,270,496

Non-Summer

Ghost in the Shell

Production Budget: $110 million
Worldwide: $169,801,921

All these had super poor domestic performance.

King Arthur... that's the winner.

Oh yeah, I knew there was one I was forgetting.

The movie didn't bomb mate.

It barely broke even. Has definitely not turned a profit yet

Covenant spent more money on advertising than I have seen in many, many years. I imagine even if it breaks ever on its budget, or makes $100 million more, it will still be a long way from recouping its ad budget -- that must have been another $250 million at least. I think its still well over $100 million in the hole.

But clearly we have two other winners: Arthur and Mummy. :lol

Why should you care though? Do you have stock in Fox? Or is it that you didn't like the film and would get some pleasure out of it if it does financially fail?

Are you genuinely asking me... or are you upset I erroneously made the assumption that Covenant was the summer's worst film? I don't really understand your question on a discussion board?

No not upset, merely curious. I didn't like Prometheus but didn't want the film to fail and didn't really take in any interest in how it did financially. Nor did I want Scott tarred and feathered and run out of town. But a lot of fans seem to want Covenant to be a bomb for some reason, which seems odd to me.

As father of the Robots & Aliens section on this board, I would never want that.

I was simply curious if Covenant was the biggest bomb... I had forgotten about Mummy already. As anyone who is curious who did the best in any given summer, I am equally ever-curious who did the worst. Seems like a natural competitive question.

I love Ridley, but he's done far worse than Covenant. I don't think anyone is running him out of town.

Fair enough. :)

Covenant's not going to be a runaway success, but it should get to where it would need to be for the series to continue. Well, in some form at least. I think it would be prudent for Fox to do an Aliens sequel for the fans, a la Rogue One. It would make a lot of fans happy, and probably be more of a commercial hit. Personally I'm looking forward to getting me mitts on the Covenant 4k blu ray, roll on August!

Uhhhhhhhhhh this was a BOMB- look at the numbers again as far as what it did against just about every major studio release. BOMB

It under-performed to say the least even if the term BOMB doesn't fit it

Ridley will bounce back but Alien is an exhaused franchise

I am one of those that went into Covenant having not seen the trailer. I watched the movie for the first time…….the first time. Now that I have seen it I look forward to rewatching on blu ray to pick up all the details that cannot be seen the first time. I enjoyed this new villian that is being created in “David”! If there was a character I was routing for it was him/it!!! I will enjoy rewatching this movie.

Aliens
Alien
Predator
Alien 3
Predator 2
Covenant
Prometheus
Predators
Alien Resurrection
AvP
AvP:R

Or simply remove the Predator-related films and that's my current ranking of the Alien franchise by itself

I would switch alien with predator because predator is better.

Would definitely, definity switch predator 2 with alien 3 because predator 2 tried something new and it is more entertaining

Would definitely switch prometheus with covenant.

And would switch avp with alien resurrection
