I heard about this. It's upsetting, to me, how when lives are lost to terrorism in Africa it's somehow nowhere near as newsworthy as lives taken, here, in the western world.

Did anyone here, in the UK, see This Week on Thursday night? I thought that French/Algerian journalist Nabila Ramdani was completely out of line with regards to how she viewed the recent Charlie Hebdo magazine cover depicting the Prophet Muhammad. I was glad to see none of the other people on the show let her off the hook for her unreasonable views on the matter.

A secular satirist has offended us. So let's burn a church and the people in it :woo

Idiots.

For better or worse, it's completely natural to identify with lives lost when the victims share particular relatable attributes with you. Paris is a lot more familiar to most folks here than Baga. It doesn't make whatever Boko Haram does any less horrific, but that's how news sells and travels.

I didn't hear about what Nabila Ramdani said, or the response to it. What happened?

I found it interesting that the co-founder of the magazine said the editor (paraphrasing) dragged the cartoonists to their deaths. More I think about it the more I agree w/DiFabio's POV. However much these guys are lionized, their deaths are pointless and what they died for is meaningless. It's sort of like if a guy in Juarez starts a magazine lampooning the local drug cartel. Would anyone be surprised when he's gunned down? Most people would just think such a person is stupid.

Or, that the society they live in is populated by cowards (with a superiority complex on account of their status as compliant survivors).

Pretty much this..

Lock up your cartoonists. Drop the shutters on your free societies. Acquiesce to the caliphate. It's much easier that way.

Also, **** jihad. **** your god. **** your faith. **** your subservient, effeminate, cowardice in the face of a universe you are too weak to face. **** your fear. **** your stupidity. **** your officious, miserable groveling you primitive, unwashed swine.

Have I said that already?

The cartoonists are 'free' to lampoon what they want, but the question is, is it worth getting shot in the face and missing out on (say) 30 years with your family and loved ones? IMO, nope. These guys haven't changed any minds, they're basically preaching to the converted, so why die for it? Seems nihilistic.

The cartoonists are like hussies that wear yoga pants without panties. They're asking for it.

And they have illustrated for us all that these men are rapists.

Now, what are you going to do about it, world? Slap a scarlet letter on their violated backsides?

Why was this thread titled "R.I.P. Charlie Hebdo"?
There is no one by that name, living or dead, and the magazine named Charlie Hebdo flourished more in one pressing because of the murders, and sold more of one issue than it has in its entire existence, and is still running.

Just thought it was odd.

I'd say I'm curious about how things will progress around the world in handling both violent attackers and the reactions of civil societies, but I'm pretty sure they'll go terribly for us all on both sides, and just get worse by degrees. :(

You might ask the same question about anyone who makes a sacrifice to uphold and protect the values of their societies. There is a profound difference between nihilism and idealism.

What am I going to do? What am I going to do? Keep buying from Sideshow.

What is the world going to do? What they always do. Nothing.

Doing nothing is better than changing how we live.

The thread title, authored immediately after the event, was an economical way of expressing an epitaph for the nearly two dozen individuals who were slain during the attack on the Charlie Hebdo offices. I suppose I could have listed them all by name, and pointed out that the victims were not all members of the paper's staff, but that would go against my natural inclination to common sense.
