Stupid question, I know: Since this wasn't shot in IMAX, will the movie just be played on the larger screen in letterboxed format, similar to the non-IMAX scenes in TDK/TDKR?

I'd imagine it would probably be like Attack of the Clones Imax in which the 35mm OAR 2.35:1 was cropped to full frame when it was scaled for the Imax 1.81:1 aspect ratio instead of the Imax Widescreen 2.40:1 aspect ratio to achieve the full scope Imax experience.

Yeah, although I've always been a bit :-\ when it comes to normal movies on IMAX. The screen is bigger, sure, but not in that balls-to-the-wall IMAX way.

However, I did love the **** out of seeing The Lion King in IMAX, so I might get around to this if it's near me.

:lecture I loved seeing that in 3D and I typically hate 3D! Great movie.

As for cropping it, that makes no sense to me. I'd rather have letterbox than cropping the film's image for the sake of making it "bigger." That's like the old fullscreen vs widescreen arguments people had before widescreen TVs became affordable to the mass market.

Either way though, I'm in!

That...would be awful. Ugh, cropping.

Anyway, I'd be willing to watch the entire Indy trilogy in IMAX.

The report states this hasn’t been officially announced yet but, it should be soon, and the press release will have a full list of theaters where you can purchase tickets. It also says the film will play in both full 70mm IMAX as well as digital “LieMAX” formats, though either will be sufficient as Spielberg obviously didn’t shoot the film in IMAX thirty plus years ago.

UPDATED: Spielberg spoke to the New York Times about the conversion, confirming the release:

"For me, it’s always been the bigger the screen, the better. It’s the only marked contrast we have to the generations that are seeing our movies on phones and hand-held platforms. It’s a complete relief to be able to see a film that many people have just experienced on a palm-sized platform technology, suddenly hurled at that them on an Imax-sized screen."

I've got a ton of IMAX theaters near me so I'm hoping at least ONE of them gets this. I've never seen Indy on the big screen save for Crystal Skull.

:horror

You must be a youngling.

Awesome news indeed!!
I hope more movies will follow!! :rock!!
BTTF, Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Terminator, Alien, Predator, to name a few would be awesome!!

My AMC did that.

They were just the DVD's! :monkey4

I saw the play button and everything. It was awful.

My theaters are showing it! :rock They've got the placeholder up on the website but are waiting for the offical word to sell the tickets.

Okay I just checked my local AMC's and they're showing Raiders in IMAX from September 7th-13th. The other movies are in a one day marathon. I think I'll just catch Raiders, I don't need to do 8+ hours of Indy in one shot.

Would never stick around to see CS again but I'd definately at least catch TOD.

Just bought tickets. I saw Raiders in a small local theater about 8 years ago, but this...this will be something else entirely.

My amc is showing this and also showing all 4 in one day. I opted to do that instead and can't wait to do that.

I'm going to get there like an hour and a half early to get my 2 posters. :yess: Will be framed above my tv, easily the best looking Indy poster ever.

I've managed to see them all now in theatres, took 10 years but was awesome. Plus Ghostbusters, BttF twice, Shining, Lebowski, Fear and Loathing, Dr. Strangelove, Apocalypse Now, Alien, Blade Runner and a ton of others. Great to have this kinda chance. Going to see Lebowski at the TLA again too this year for Lebowski fest in Philly also in September.
