Recently went through my new Universal Monsters Blu-Ray set...

Dracula (1931) - 9/10
Frankenstein (1931) - 9/10
The Mummy (1932) - 7/10
The Invisible Man (1933) - 8/10
Bride of Frankenstein (1935) - 8/10
The Wolf Man (1941) - 9/10
Phantom of the Opera (1943) - 7/10
Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) - 7/10

Even though the scares somewhat pale in comparison to modern day horror, these movies are still incredibly enjoyable, and there is no denying the significance of these films. They DEFINE the horror movie genre.

I just wish they had included the 1925 Lon Chaney Sr. version of The Phantom of the Opera!

Having said all of that, the movies, Dracula 1931 in particular are not deserving of a 9/10 score. We see no character development, and at the end, it feels as though half a movie is lost... Van Helsing says, "Dracula is dead", but we don't see his death or get any explanation as to how he died. lol I imagine a stake to the heart. I get it was a different time then, and violence and death on screen was probably not condoned. Love the set pieces though. In the end, I still love the nostalgia of it, but I can't see past the minuses. hehe

It was ok, pretty much a modern day Cannibal Holocaust. The whole shakey cam type set up. A group of dumb ***** go searching for a missing man that they heard legends about deep in the jungles of New Guinea. Yup thats it.

I've seen it a couple times but it's been a while since the last time.

There is very little that I like about this movie.
I would even go as far as to say that I hate it.
And I actually really enjoy the first RZ Halloween.
Which ofcourse has it's flaws too. But I still love it.
Part 2 though......ew

I feel like this movie makes Michael too human.
It explains his motivation too much.

It's kind of cool to think that the whole mother/white horse type of stuff might be happening inside of his head and driving him.
But I'd rather not see it.
His motivation should be mostly a mystery to the audience and the people in the movie.

I also watched "Dracula Vs. Frankenstein" today.
What absolute terrible ****.

Dollar store makeup,Speaking through a toilet paper role voice Dracula was awful.

Frankenstein's monster had the worst makeup of all time.
Looked like his face was made out of sun baked turds.

I feel bad for Lon Chaney Jr. having been in this movie.

As I mentioned, Universal horror was genre defining, Bela Legosi's Dracula is probably THE most famous incarnation of the character, and these movies made the horror movie genre what it is today.

These movies are around 80 years old, and they were made to the cinematic standards of what was available and expected at the time. Surely you cannot expect 21st century dialogue, cinematography, character development etc? They still create a sense of eeriness and uncertainty, which make them great movies in my opinion.

I'm sure in 2092, when cinematic standards have changed again, your great great grandson will tear The Avengers apart lol

Hey Mr. Drama Queen, relax. I am a fan. I have all the movies beside me, and I did bring up what were the times then. As a period piece, it was probably a decent movie. Fair enough, but it hasn't aged gracefully in terms of story telling, character development, and all that other stuff... Anyway, I just don't agree with you. And how would we be wrong if you did? Because it's fact? It's called subjection. There is a fine line between the two. Figure it out.

Anyway, too many movies get far too many easy grades on here. I love my Dracula for what it was.. interesting set pieces for the time and a cool looking grampa vampire (which I own the PF of, and absolutely love). Anyway, I said good day. I SAID GOOD DAY!

I give it, 4 out of 10 for what it really is. A bonus (ummmm) 2.5 for nostalgia, because as a kid I was enthralled with the character and the old black and white monster films. So by that math, it's 6.5 out of 10. Adding is fun! Damn, nostalgia rocks the grade!

P.S. Terminator 2 was released in 1991 and it hasn't aged one bit. Minus some hair styles, outfits, and cars.. but who's being picky? Oh right... we are. *squints eyes*
