Another one of those movies that succeeds because of the performances more than anything else.

I finally watched The Fourth Kind the other night.

I liked it for the most part. Going in, I thought I'd hate it - going by all the bad reviews & general panning it's gotten thus far, but no actually. Apart from some over the top scenes - & the woman playing the supposed 'real' Dr Abigail Tyler looking & sounding like a zombie in Sepia during her post trauma interviews, I really dug it. The 'owl' component was great.

I understand the issues folks have with it; namely the 'based on true events' business, but ehh.. whatever.

I really, really dig this film too. In fact the first time I watched it, I was all alone in the movie theatre for its showing. No one else there because of the bad reviews I guess which is a shame because It think its a pretty damn fine little horror film. It's quite disturbing actually when the alien abduction stuff kicks in and the ending is pretty damn unsettling. And the scenes with Dr. Taylor in the "real" world are creepy as hell because as you say due to the way its shot and her zombiefication. I prefer this film over Dark Skies, which had a bigger budget.

Yeah man, it was cool.

While I'm genuinely intrigued by the UFO phenomena, I normally try & steer clear of stupid alien conspiracy films. This one I thought, was going to be just like that - but it was more than that, so it was refreshing in that sense. It clearly has the Paranormal Activity / Blair Witch vibe about it though.. which I'm not necessarily into to be honest.

That said - one of my all time fave films in this genre to this day, is FIRE IN THE SKY. It also got panned initially, because folks were saying it wasn't sure what kind of film it wanted to be; horror, documentary etc. I saw it in the cinema back in 1993, & it scared the ****ing **** out of me.

Now it's a cult hit apparently.. what'ya know. It's also touted as having one of the most frightening abduction sequences ever. It's pretty damn convincing.

How would you rate the first one? Myself, I liked the first one, notsomuch the second.

Actually, I should reverse that and give the first a 0 and the second maybe a 2.
The first was just a mass of setups for easy improv jokes in a very a loose plot. At least the second had a bit of a direction to the story, and I got some decent laughs. But when Ron went blind it just totally tanked for me from then on.
