I like the girl in that....

Don't you though? She and Redmayne really accomplished world class performances in their respective roles. I had forgotten that she didn't earn a Best Supporting Actress nomination but rather Best *Actress* period. And she totally deserved it. Charlie Cox was great too. It's always fun to see genre favorites holding their own and more in films like this. The cinematography, score, and script were all absolutely first rate. 2014 might have been the best year for dramas in one or two decades. Birdman, Boyhood, The Imitation Game, and The Theory of Everything. Pretty astounding.

It was based on a Japanese folk tale, and pretty faithful to it, as I understand.

You and I seem to love a lot of the same movies so I don't want to bash Kubo. I was *so* into it for so long, the visuals were really quite breathtaking and the twin sisters were borderline horror movie scary. The ending just fell flat for me which was a big bummer. It didn't seem to resonate with my kids either but we didn't discuss it too much afterward so maybe I'm wrong on that one.

Oh no, please, don't feel like you have to edit yourself in expressing your thoughts on a film, it's all good. Just gave me another chance to express my love for this movie.

I think the only Laika film that bored me was Boxtrolls, but I have a high tolerance for slow moving films.

GOTG Vol II.. 4/10 about half as good as Vol 1 especially the CGI.IMO

Trying too hard this time to be humorous, especially Drax character. The spontaneity was gone and the banter felt slightly forced.

The CGI was pretty bad so I did some checking and they used WETA who was not used in Vol 1.But I can't say they were the cause because some of the other effects were done by the same Co's in Vol 1.I was really surprised they let so much of this slide being nowhere near as clean and clear as Vol 1's effects.

GOTG 2: 7/10

Fun movie, but rests so heavily on its laurels. Jokes weren't as effective as before, not much in the way of tension. But succeeds at its goals.

Gotg vol.2 - 8/10

I seem to be in the minority here but I think this was better than the first. I may have to rewatch the first again before making that my definitive answer. All I can say is on first viewing I enjoyed Gotg 2 much more than the Gotg but, I haven't watched either more than once. So second viewing may fair differently.

Regarding the change from 1 to 2, the characters that maintained a slight edge after the first one lost it here. And you can only assume they'll get softer as the franchise goes on. The analogy Starlord makes to Cheers was fairly appropriate :lol I didn't think Baby Groot was all that great. Kurt Russell was a bright spot, though he was just being himself. Was cool that we finally got to see
the Watchers
.

Well then by all means gush away. I'm curious as to what resonated with you. I was pretty captivated throughout and then felt let down by what I thought was an anti-climactic finale with a weak final message ("memories are the most powerful magic of all.") And I don't mind slow movies either. We recently watched and enjoyed "The Secret of the Kells" which is MUCH slower than Kubo.

But apparently my kids did love Kubo. I asked them to rank it among all the other animated films of the past year (Zootopia, Finding Dory, The Secret Life of Pets, Trolls, Moana, and Lego Batman) and my daughter had Moana and Kubo tied for first and my son ranked it third behind Lego Batman and Moana.

Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) - 5/10

Is this the same movie I enjoyed in the theater? Watching it at home I found it completely unremarkable. I feel like I'm being generous in even giving it a 5. I must have really been dazzled by the IMAX 3D. :cuckoo:

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - 7/10

While I enjoyed the movie, it falls pretty short of the first one, for me at least. The jokes misfired as often as they hit, Baby Groot was underwhelming. The biggest mistake was to separate the group, as their chemistry is a big reason the first one was so good. The last 30 minutes was much better than what came before, and the use of "the chain" by Fleetwood Mac fit perfectly in the film.

I may have just had my expectations too high, as the first set a very high bar, but I'll see when it comes on video.

Fantastic beasts and where to find them.

7.2/10

Fun new sets and characters.......not so much of a good plot....
