Sometimes you SHOULD listen to Internet complainers….

Halloween Ends 2/10: <mostly for the camera work,>.
This film is one of the worst films I have seen in years…..Truly awful. Bizarre convoluted plot that has zero narrative trail, all of which is thrown out in the last minutes of the film. Then perhaps the most over the too laughable ending I have ever witnessed.

I am a huge Halloween fan. I found something redeeming on almost all of them….some more than other. I actually even like some of the stinkers …for pure nostalgia. (I liked the Thorn plot)

This is not only the worst Halloween films ever done, its one of the worst films ever done.

Bullet Train 7.5/10
Fun, Wacky, good dialogue. Nice canerawork and sets (even the CGI ones). Some laugh out loud moments, and a real nice “tie it all up” ending. Definetly a second watch for all the things you missed!

The Outsider (TV series) 9/10
Man , did they nail this weird little Stephen King book. Bateman really did a great job with acting and directing this.
Cinematography is top tier.
Ben Mendolson is great.
Tension is palpable.
Real binge worthy show.

Tony was definitely a bad guy, but I (and I’m sure many others) found myself rooting for him.
Boy not me… always just thought he was an ***hole Fitting ending to that piece of **** :lol

I know fans put him on a pedestal and we all love to root for the bad guy but Vito Corleone he ain’t

Or Micheal
Or Carlito
Or Tommy DeVito
Or Tony Soprano
Or Dracula

:lol

Mission to Mars - 5/10
There are parts of this movie that feel like a fairly realistic sci-fi movie like Deep Impact. Pretty much 80% of the movie feels like this actually. The rescue mission is pretty good, some good tense moments and it feels like there are actual stakes. And then there's the ending... Yeah... Outdated CGI aside, they kinda went overboard with the ending.

Jurassic Park - 10/10
I remember when this came out. Had a number of the toys and remember being awed by the movie. Hard to believe this is almost 30 years old. It still holds up. Of course there's a lot of nostalgia that comes with it, but this remains an absolute classic.

Its odd. As I get older I find myself less and less sympathetic for the anti hero.

On that list, the only one I really was rooting for was Vito. Maybe because he was a bad guy fighting much worse guys…

Same for Michael , at least in the beginning, Michael is real monster as the films progress.

Tommy Devito was a scumbag. Charismatic and funny, but his actions through Goodfellas are horrible, (and his real life actions worse.)

Tony Soprano ….he is a tough one. Attempted reformist, hard to do anything but feel sorry for him and his inability to get it together in either world.

Carlito….not interesting enough.

and Dracula….cursed, tragic figure. I only rooted for his release.

I agree with this all.

As o get older I find it hard to believe o ever kinda sorta rooted for them.

Hell I watched Stripes not long ago and could not get over how much I was rooting for the Sgt. Hulka over Winger lol

But the one thing all those characters had over Scarface was there was something likable about them.

Vito had a code of honor and the times were different so it was easy to root for him. Micheal became everything his father wasn’t

I was kidding about Dracula. I just find it easier to root even him than Scarface :lol

Scarface had no redeeming qualities IMO

Nope 3/10
Really love Get Out and Us but this is just terrible. Exhibit A that sometimes filmmakers shouldn’t be given unlimited budgets. Nice cast, nice effects, absolute awful script that reminded me of Shyalaman at his worst.

Guess which one of these is the real hero?

ARE YOU ON DOPE???

I hear him all day at work….stoners have no idea how difficult they are to deal with in a business setting….

I have never been a fan of Scarface. I watched the movie for the first time about 20 years ago in my late teens and recently gave it a rewatch. I didn't think it was anything special back then, and still don't. It wasn't a bad movie, but I really don't get all the reverence this character has gotten over the years. He's an unlikeable hot headed fine fellow who always manages to make the choice that'll cost him most in the end. Not exactly a role model.

Edit: :lol @ the language filter. "Fine fellow" :lol :lol

I'm in my late 20s and watched it for the first time a few months ago, had only seen snippets before then.

I can only enjoy Tony from a detached, meme-y perspective. He's funny in a caricature kind of way, but not in the context of the film's events if that makes sense.

Requiem for a Dream - 8/10
Another one of those films that I first saw at an age where I was just getting into films and didn't fully grasp back then. So it was time for a rewatch. This is a really good film, but not something I'd enjoy watching again anytime soon. It drains you and keeps lingering on the mind. Powerful stuff. I totally forgot Marlon Wayans was in this. Don't think I've ever seen him do anything besides comedy before, but he did pretty well.

Yep I agree. It’s a film I return to from time to time cause I like crime films and I like AP in the film but I also don’t get the reverence his character gets.

He’s not even a villain you love to hate… you just hate him. I think I pulled for him in the chainsaw scene but he was just the lesser of two evils.

A good character film for sure. But nothing to hero worship like some do.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

6/10. The MCU formulas and tropes are so overused by now that they’re getting a bit threadbare.

Dragonslayer 4k Blu Ray - 9

Holy smokes, there is a God!
Matthew Robbins underrated 1981 fantasy gets a superlative 4k release from Paramount.
Beautifully lensed by the late Derek Vanlint, every shot is simply gorgeous in 4k.
The dragon, Vermithrax Perjorative, is a marvel of design and brought to life by the outstanding talent of the crew at ILM.
The lake of fire sequence is still a jaw-dropping spectacle some 41 years later. I can’t recommend this enough.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

8/10

Here’s a repost of my review in the thread for the movie:

Wife and I saw Honor Among Thieves this evening and we had a great time. The movie succeeded very strongly in making us care about the characters. We were rooting for them. The spirit of the game was captured well although my wife who has no experience playing D&D stated she basically got the gist of everything that was going on regarding spells and such. The action and CGI were surprisingly good. The emotional impact at the end of the movie worked.

I think the film could have done a little better job at instilling a bit clearer sense of the setting. The Forgotten Realms land of Faerun is rich with detail. But it looks like this film will perform well enough that we’ll get a sequel to eventually get that. Dollars to donuts the next film will feature the city of Baldur’s Gate.

Edit next morning: I‘ll add few more observations.

The movie’s sense of the setting does kind of reflect how the game is actually played. The author of the Forgotten Realms setting, Ed Greenwood, created cities and areas like forests and mountain ranges, each to have their own unique fantasy realm identity within a world roughly inspired by medieval Europe. The communities have very distinct identities in order to give a sense of diversity within the setting so that you can go explore and adventure in them and have an interesting experience. So in that sense it’s not a culturally homogenous world—although by the same token, there are basic building blocks of the setting such as character classes, spells, religions, paladin orders, factions such as the Harpers and Red Wizards of Thay, etc., that remain constants.

Another thing I noticed is that the dialogue and humor reflect what happens when folks are enjoying the roleplaying during gameplay. By this I mean the story evolves through what players are imagining and it takes shape organically through interaction with the Dungeon Master. Players are actually routinely required to invent creative solutions extemporaneously during the game. And as they do this it can be rather amusing how players express themselves in character when they interact. It really is a blast, and is often absurd. But it is a game after all! As for the game’s on-the-fly creativity Chris Pine’s character, Edgin, a Bard, exemplifies that basic experience.

And finally there is a sense in which the movie starts out with you just having to react to an introduction, and it maybe even feels a bit choppy as it starts off, and the action is slow in the beginning as it establishes the backstory. But as it continues it begins to pick up momentum and coherence as the tale unfolds. This also reflects what playing the game is like! By the time you get to the end the characters have bonded and the emotional ending reflects how players feel about their characters and the sheer fun of playing the game with one another, as a shared experience.

The Sorcerer-Thief character Simon reflects a dynamic to the game regarding creativity and problem-solving that’s quite interesting. It reflects a psychological truth which arguably extends well beyond the game and taps into the realm of the archetypal. Similarly Edgin’s sacrifice at the end reflects the sort of lesson in real life that often takes place if we remain creatively open and receptive to life as it exists on its own terms versus how we wish or hope it to be, etc.

So the movie is indeed a faithful enactment of what it’s like to play a wonderful roleplaying fantasy game. And because the experience of playing the game is satisfying, the movie can be too—if you can open your mind to it. Same as if one is sitting at a table with other real live people playing the game.

And again, one need not have to have played the game in order for their psyche to instinctively pick up on these elements as one simply sits back and takes in the film. The directors, writers, and actors realized that surprisingly well. Imo for that alone the film deserves the praise it is getting.

Super Mario Brothers: 6/10

Pretty fun for what it is, really well done cg, but it's purely made for young kids so it doesn't have much depth. Feels a bit like empty calories. But it does recreate the experience of playing the games in some ways.

Aliens: 9.5/10

Doesn't get much better. Great in about every way a movie can be. Cameron earned his ego with this and terminator in my opinion.

Renfield - 6.5 out of 10. Easy watch. Nic Cage was great. The score would be higher if he was in it more

Evil Dead Rise - 8 out of 10. Bloody great time. Better than the remake. Fully enjoyed it. Ending was a slight let down. Knocked a point off. It was still satisfactory.
