Resident Evil is official dead then.

I love the modern resident evil games but at the same time I miss the style of RE1, 2 etc. So i'm well and truly down the middle. Personally RE6 is my most anticipted game this year now.

I can understand where he is coming from, but it's like it has been said before, Resident Evil just wasn't staying "fresh".

But I also blame that on the Japanese trait of "staying with what they know" and "not taking risks". This is one of the main reasons the Japanese gaming industry has been noted as "dying", because they have not evolved with the trends of gaming as the technology has gotten better, as the storyline have gotten more in depth and the controls have begun to get more interactive and complex. Even when they took Resident Evil into the new perspective and action-oriented, they still tried to stick with some awkward motions (i.e.: not moving while shooting) of survival horror that just didn't translate well and other games have gotten by without...

Look at what some Japanese publishers have been doing and achieving more success (perhaps with better overall sales too). Konami gives Castlevania to a Western publisher and revitalizes the series with a great game. Capcom has begun farming out their franchises to the West, one being Ninja Theory with Devil May Cry, Square Enix buy Eidos and now owns the Tomb Raider, Deux Ex and Legacy of Kain franchises.

CAPCOM in particular I think has begun to focus more of their games on the Western audience because at the bottomline, that's where the money is at now. Japan just isn't doing for it anymore. Plus a lot of Japanese publishers funnel out the same games with a new coat of paint, but they're the same, exact thing.

I disagree that survival horror is dead. Perhaps the traditional forum of it in the span of Capcom's direction but the medium can evolve.

One of the best "action/survival horror" games in my opinion is DOOM 3. I believe that is one of the scariest games of the modern era. Scarier than Dead Space (I barely jumped at Dead Space...compared to Doom 3, it's nuthin' in my opinion). DOOM 3 did a great job of blending a creepy atmosphere with running and gunning. The dark hallways and even FORCING you to just be able to equip just the flashlight was tense enough.

I think Japan just doesn't clearly understand how to blend the lines just now. They think Americans want plain and simple action! But it's not true, you capture Americans' attentions for Resident Evil if you appeal to our thoughtful and intriguing nature. If you leave more to MYSTERY as to what we're already anticipating, then you have us.

Kawata-san, go play Doom 3 several times over and see exactly how you can blend or recreate the "survival horror" genre.

This is why we really should get a Racoon City series remake.Alot of fans miss that simple Zombie horror including me.

Resident Evil's overall storyline has evolved past the "local horror". It's a worldwide pandemic of zombies and whatever those tentacle monsters are.

The Japanese name "Biohazard" actually fits it better now.

I'm sure Capcom will eventually do a remake of the original game with a Western developer. Seems to be the direction a lot of games are going nowadays to revitalize old franchises.

There comes a time where a series just needs to stop. When a series is young and each game is an extension of the last with similar play style and continuation of story then by all means make sequels. But when the game style gets old and you have to change it drastically to keep up with the times, just stop. Make a new game series.

You haven't met Capcom have you? Not that I disagree of course.

I really don't like Resident Evil going in the direction of becoming a Gears of War clone either.

I've adapted to the more action-oriented style of RE4 and RE5 and actually enjoy those games for the most part and enjoy seeing my favorite characters and what they're up to, but I still do miss the classic style that started the series.

Spinoffs like Operation Raccoon City are fine. Seeing the Resident Evil universe from a different gameplay perspective can be really awesome if done right. That game was actually kind of fun, although it could've been handled a lot better. I actually thought that Revelations was a step in the right direction. While still pretty action-oriented, it had a creepier atmosphere that made it feel a little more survival horror than the past several releases in the series.

I know that a lot disagree with me, but I just don't want this game series to play like everything else that's popular right now. I really don't need to have a cover system if I'm fighting zombies in a horror game and I probably don't need to run and shoot either. As long as I can survive and defend myself, I'm pretty happy. I love Dead Space as well, but I've never had to move and shoot while playing that game even though it's something you can do.

Honestly, the thing I'd like to see the most is a series of remakes of 2, 3, and maybe Code Veronica with the old fixed cameras in the old gameplay style. It'll almost certainly never happen, but it's what would make me most happy. I'd also like them to release Resident Evil 1.5, but that's even less likely.

Dead Space has been the king of survival horror games on this generation (of consoles) for me. I think it will continue to be (a Dead Space 3 is in the works).

Resident Evil blows, the first two were good and after that I stopped caring....I don't like the direction the franchise went in. I just don't like anything about the recent RE games.

Dead Space is one of the few real Survival Horror franchise not to have sold out yet.

I know ORC was meant to be all actiony but i was hoping that RE6 would feel like a horror game

Honestly? Give me REmake in RE4 over the shoulder perspective and mix Zombies with V-ACT crimsons as standard enemies. Plenty of Lickers, hunters, hunter gamma and beta, cerberus, chimera, brain suckers, drain demois the hole lot

I don't think I'd want to play Resident Evil 1 in RE4 gameplay perspective. It could be done that way, but I don't think it needs to be.

I think it has to be. Its the compromise id be happy with. Fixed cameras werent for everyone. Over the shoulder is widely accepted and used for the GOW/COD brigade. I dont mind upping the pace, so long as theres a reason. Hunters storming at you, crimsons darting for your blood. I always felt that i shouldve run faster in REmake and that Yawn shouldve been blisteringly quick, Fi-03 Neptune shouldve been just as quick in the water. Not that i didnt love it. But running so slow did bring the game down abit.

The more i play the originals, the more i feel that some of the anxiousnes or fear of encountering a crimson or hunter was because of how slow chris/jill was running at. i shouldve darted past a crimson not feel like im driving a bus.

Environments and atmosphere is perfect. All RE needed was to give more manouveurability to suit the situation. Jill in RE3 ran fastest in any game along with auto dosge, quick turn and auto running/ walking up steps. RE3 is my fave gameplay wise because it upped the ante and pace, didnt feel tank-slow and had some fluidity.

RE3 over the shoulder would be my idea of a perfect compromise. Slow pace workd when exploring the RPD, Umbrella labs or the mansion when there was no enemies, but it didnt feel like any urgency when encountering BOWs, i wouldve sprinted like hell but the pace didnt feel right now. It needed urgency and more pace in character movement.

Instead of tanking around a hunter, id love to have sprinted, ducked underneath as it swiped or leaped for me and bolted through the door. Not slow mo, but duck, clamber back to my feet, maybe drop my handgun in the process.

Think how they ran to the mansion in REmakes intro, nearly falling, out of breath and panicking.

I think REcode veronica was as good as RE gets

I agree. It was pretty much the last one to follow the normal RE style. 4 and 5 were fun but they both had aspects that really started to change what RE is and was. They really should stop. It's changing too much to be fun anymore.

What Capcom doesn't seem to realize is that people want more than just an RE setting and characters. It wasn't just about those aspects but the WHOLE experience. The camera, the controls, the gameplay, story... All of it together is what made RE fun in the early games. If that old style doesn't work for today's games or today's audience, get a new franchise to stick your new play style on.

Operation Raccoon City proves that it takes more than RE setting and characters to make a game RE fans enjoy.

i loved orc because of its setting. plenty of faults but i prefere that to 4 and 5. it hqd a good atmosphere in many parts. Crimsons in the fog/ smoke at the chopper crash site for one.

i played CV and i couldnt play it. it just felt dated when it came out.
