Actually, the novelization of ANH mentions that Vader got his injuries from a duel in a lava pit with Obi-Wan. That's been in the story from the very beginning.

Hmm - I seem to remember as a kid hearing that he got it from the Sarlaac Pit... that's before ROTJ was around and we had SEEN The Sarlaac Pit.

Could be wrong though.

No, Vader being defeated by Obi-Wan and being thrown into a volcano or lava was mentioned in the Star Wars novel. Although, didn't the the original novel also have Obi-Wan and Uncle Owen as brothers?

The novelisation of Return of the Jedi has Obi-Wan saying that Owen was his brother.

Amusingly, the Jedi Apprentice books (the kiddie books about Obi-Wan's padawan days) also mention that he has a brother named Owen.

Then AOTC came out.

There's no reason Obi and Owen couldn't be brothers. Mayhaps Clieg gave up his first son to the Jedi.

I'm 100% positive that the ANH novelization mentions that Vader is burned by lava after a duel with Obi-Wan.

I actually remember reading this on TheForce.net before Ep. I even came out, and I was amazed that I had never heard this tidbit before.
