I'm not trying to tell you how to post Deckard, but just as a fyi, I've posted two gifs in my time here which got infracted, one had the words, "Not a **** was given that day" and the other said "Dip****s everywhere". Both times the mods cited that its considered evading the cussword filter. Just sayin, yo' ! :lol

Liked it.

It is actually pretty decent.

Yes I do think it is good enough that some newbs won't be ashamed of themselves to say ''prefer it to the original'' - and that's what everyone in here fears, even guys like me, Difabio and Nova. I don't want people to say that, I want them to see and respect the original, then and only then being permitted to like this one.

Its very very different to the original, the whole angle they take on it. But it is likeable the way it plays out. I think its Nolan's Batman to Burton's Batman. You can prefer to watch one or the other but it doesn't mean the other is crap (except TDKR, which really was)

I am slightly conflicted in how I feel about that point actually because it goes against the grain of my MOS rants and my wish that Superhero films generally would stop with the Nolan $h!t and go back to fantasy. This Robocop feels less fantasy and more like its going for the real-world Nolan-type stuff. I feel like I'm showing a double standard there in being open to it here, I dunno.

Oldman and Keaton were brilliant, loved every scene they were in. Robocop himself or indeed Alex/Murphy as he is mostly referred to in the film (it makes sense in the movie) is good, I did find myself rooting for him, maybe not quite as much as Weller.

I'll mention a few other things in spoiler tags

Didn't like the music in the training sequence, not sure it was the same as in that released clip, but whatever, didn't like it anyway. Nor did I like that the end credits began with 'I fought the Law', it seemed out of place

They do use the Basil Poledouris theme at the beginning but not at the end. Really seemed like they should have closed the film with it aswell.

Robocop's reveal is that dream sequence that was released. While nifty, still not as cool as Weller's reveal

He doesn't get a particularly good final scene. He's in his new suit, the wife and child enter the room and walk toward him and the doors close behind them cutting off our view and the scene ends. Then it cuts to another Sam Jackson news segment and amateur footage through a window of Robocop walking past. Not a very fist-pumping ending like you got in the original film with Weller turning around and smiling 'Murphy'

The fact that this Robocop can take damage and has to take cover and so on - it was OK, he still gets shot plenty - adds a bit of suspense I guess

Just to confirm that the black suit IS the one that sees all the action. He starts off in a silver suit, then Keaton says they should make him black. After Keaton is out of the picture it seems they go right back to silver and the more classic design. Presumably if there is a sequel he'd be in traditional Robocop colours for the entirety of that film

Buuuuuut if the showing I went to was anything to go by this film will not get a sequel. There was about 20 people there max. The wind and p!$$ing rain might have had something to do with that though.

If a sequel was made I would watch it.

Firstly, I read your whole post a-dev - including the spoilers.. :lol
Seriously, the insight is appreciated - regardless of my view on this film so far. :)

Secondly, the above part I quoted - don't agree with that. While - sure, RoboCop has been pushed via various media avenues since 1987 (& in that sense has a degree of ongoing milkability), I don't see the character in the same light as institutions like Batman or Kal-El, who have lent themselves perfectly to re-interpretation over the last 70+ years.

The Verhoeven film was a one shot - & that's how it should've stayed. It was a perfect way to salute the character / film - by leaving it alone after that. Why does everything have to be wrung until it's bone dry, before it's time to move on?

I know this is common knowledge, but the only 'remakes' that were justified over the years, were ones that actually improved the property - or gave it new life.

Ehh.. what can I say that hasn't already been said adnauseum.. :lol

Thanks Vintij.

However, regardless of what should or shouldn't have been done- its here. And its a decent film. If it were given the chance it could ''franchise'' better than the original did. Again setting aside whether Robocop should have been franchised they sure did try before and it failed. 2 was average at best. 3 $h!te. TV shows $h!te. I could see this one doing better if it were allowed to. It won't be. Too few people are giving it a chance.

Anyway my Batman comparison was intended more to suggest how this film compares tonally with the original - less so than a statement about the milkability or lack thereof.

Good to see that you like it a-dev, that gives me hope for my viewing. As far as interests go we seem to be on the same page, so I'm looking forward to this. I see it this Wednesday as a back to back feature with the original film. Can't wait.

A fully cognizant unspecified robot policeman from the near-future wearing the typical generic cop-fodder outfit of the last 20 years called and said, "B***hes, leave."
