Haha ok it just seems so odd to me that a line of figures this good would not be very popular in Japan.

Japan has actually been responsible for alot of good lines being cancelled, the first one that comes to mind is the MG figurerise line for dbz; they were basically hot toys scale model kits with the same joints as the figuarts line, and due to poor Japan sales, the Vegeta and Trunks armor protos never seen light.

Japan has a weird taste when it comes to things like this; they ignore it until it dies off, then they become desperate to bring it back.

The first release was Piccolo in November 2009, then Goku in January 2010 and Gohan in July 2010. They showed the prototype of Goku normal and Vegeta, and the line was stopped in the Asian country because was not successfull. Tese 3 action figures was sold in France as limited (in French tamashii nation webshop) and in the Asian country as regular.

Then the license changed to America, and the first figure was Son Goku in the SDCC in 2011 and then in December 2011 was sold the other winner poll SS Vegeta, then they sold SS3 Son Goku in March 2012 meanwhile they continued doing polls to know what figure was the most wanted of the poll, then they released Trunks in May 2012. In July was sold in SDCC Son Gohan, and in December 2012 released Cell all the figures appear in the poll that Bluefin did. These figures appeared like regular in USA, but in Asia was sold via Tamashii webshop as limited.

^ Thanks for the overview! Didn't know the first one was that old.

All of this imo just shows DBZ is a somewhat different thing outside Japan than it is natively. I'm not saying anything is better or worse than anything else, but the level of change the westernisation of DBZ brought kinda is, in terms of people's responses to it, somewhat akin to MMPR. I think that matters somewhat. It matters to fan interest in different markets where they're familiar with different versions, different release dates, different times it was released in (and ergo different hype), different tastes for any given version, and different approaches to fandom and popularity.

To be quite frank, somehow I'm just never that surprised to hear DBZ isn't as popular in japan (anymore) as it is outside of it (relatively). If I look at DBZ as an anime, purely the japanese version, I think I'd be inclined to say there's animes out there of which I'd be a bigger fan. Animes that are, in their japanese version, more serious and/or more complex. For an anime DBZ is pretty simple and nowadays not that special tbh. Apart from the revitelasition via Kai.

I'm just saying, within the competition of japanese entertainment, I can see why DB(Z) isn't perhaps like the best selling thing (these days) akin to sentai or kamen rider, or kaiju, or other anime like naruto, one piece, Gundam and what not...

I agree, from an objective standpoint dbz is showing its age as an anime, but, at least for me, the reason I got hooked on dbz was simply because I loved the characters and the story in general, and no other anime can touch that for me.

I guess its just japanese culture, they move on from things while we grow attached. Sentai is a prime example; its a yearly thing in japan, whereas PR tries as much as possible to extend each season into two, even three seasons at times, because we react better to 5hings we recognise.

hey guys check this nice work in progress custom by Fernando Merlos

I'll post more pictures as soon as he is done with this custom.

I am currently working on this but on trunks hair. Now that the bootlegs have been shown I am not going to waste my second ss vegeta on a custom.
I also hope he is adding muscles to those legs and a little bit to the forearms.

btw silrian, you forgot attack on titan, which is the big thing now. just saying :p

How is any anime hated more than Naruto?

Sadly true more or less lol

Naruto, though I myself don't care for it, actually has a vast amount of layered references to aaaaall kinds of parts of japanese culture, as a japanese person I can imagine getting more out of that. But that's just something I took away from an english teacher who taught in Japan I spoke to a while back.

Attack on Titan, yeah, could've mentioned that. Tried it, didn't appeal to me. So many animes are quite disturbing to me, often I wonder whether DBZ isn't just too... sleak and nice for Japanese anime fans.:p An android sucking up another android is about the sickest thing that happened in DBZ, pretty weak for anime standards. Especially when you realise DB is more a comedy in general, kindof easy to see how the original japanese version gets overtaken in many aspects by other, newer anime. Not enough deaths, mecha suits, power gadgets, monsters and mindf@cking plots.:p From a super hero fan's pov however (with emphasis on the ocean/funimation version) it's still is a holy grail imo.

I don't like any anime other than Dragon Ball. I only like the original characterization from the Japanese. Goku is a much more interesting character. They didn't follow his characterization from Dragon Ball into Dragon Ball Z in the Western versions. Awesome quotes though. Gohan was the more super heroic character. Goku loves all life and wants peace, but he's got a lot of pride, which puts his warrior side first. Although, he's not arrogant and wants to live modestly. He doesn't care if he beats anyone. He just needs to know whether he can.

Wanna know something? the creator of gundam said something about attack on titan, that it's on the same level of pornography :lol
Naruto and bleach were pretty good and interesting in the beginning but started to suck as it moved further. one piece was the only anime that actually got better. anyhooo, i havent watched an anime show in years... :monkey1

Blood's awesome updated display picture made me take an updated picture of my Figuarts shelves, seeing as we don't post much pictures anymore here (sorry, was hard to focus the cam but it gives the general idea).

Most are back in simple poses cause somehow I find that appealing. Goku will get added to the lower shelf and I'm not sure if I'll keep my second Vegeta (on that shelf or at all). If I do I might actually buy two normal Goku's. I guess if I buy Krillin he'd get added next to Piccolo, as well as the twins and/or other android period characters. Ultimately the MMPR's will move to my glass case so that space will open up. I don't however think I'll have much more space for DBZ Figuarts so if the Buu period starts, and I do end up buying some of it, I've no idea where to put it.:lol Guess I should replace the lower shelf for a longer one by then.

Anyone else got new pics to fill up this newsless winter void?

Don't really get the porno remark:lol... I've actually (prepare to be godsmacked) never seen cowboy bebop, so I casually started to watch that lately. I also kinda like Vash the Stampede which is also a space western. Never really dug Naruto but I love Gundam Wing, though haven't yet been taken in by a different Gundam series. Tried Evangelion, didn't dig it. I loved Death Note (who didn't?) and I liked fate/stay night, or fate night/stay or whatevs. Still need to watch Azumanga Daioh some time as that's funny as hell in the right mood. And who hasn't seen yu-gi-oh, pokemon and digimon!? And there's some different stuff I forgot about now. So I'm a casual anime fan I guess.

Naruto is definitely laced with references to Japanese culture mainly tied to the Shinto religion (Izanagi) DBZ as well (Kami-sama) etc. But none as much as Naruto from what I've seen.

Strangely I've always heard that One Piece is way more popular than Naruto in Japan.

Which was pretty evident from my time over there as One Piece merchandise was everywhere. Bleach didn't seem very popular there as well which kinda surprised me too. Hardly saw any Bleach merchandise on shelves.

nice and clean. nothing wrong with museum like poses. i had them in all kinds of poses from just standing to fighting stance and now flying around. why two goku's though? for a battle scene?

yeaah, one piece is (or was, idk) the number one hit anime and for a good reason, it pretty much had everything, interesting story, characters, hilarious moments, nice fights, yada yada, yada. alot of people get's turned off by the drawing style, i too had to get used to it but i hated Oda for killing off my favorite character Ace >_> but that was such a powerful moment though. :monkey2

Yeah blood, I really tried to get into them, but disliked every one I saw. They weren't bad, it's just not for me. I just lucked out with Dragon Ball. It's not a bad thing though, because it allows me to use "tv time" for other things, like watch Breaking Bad for the bajillionth time! The only ones I really hated Death Note and Full Metal Alchemist. They just seemed so pretentious and over dramatic.
