And no, Sauron was one of the Maiar [spirits that descended into Arda at its beginning, though not as powerful as the Valar]. Sauron was one of the most powerful of the Maiar, and originally one of Aulë's people. He was eventually corrupted and became one of Melkor's greatest servants.

I've read LOTR about three times now and don't remember that Sauron was called Annatar although I did read it in another Tolkien book I have. Wasn't he trying to be elf kind or elf like though because they were harder to seduce than the dwarves and men? Anyway thanks for the but I read plenty already just forget bits sometimes..........shoot me

The one thing I hate about these forums is although we have brilliant smilies they don't always get across the message and when I read that back it sounded a bit ^^^^^y and I didn't mean it to be!! In fact I meant it quite funnily that i read so bloody much and can't remember any of it!!!

Yes cool book forgot to answer that part (you see what I mean!! ) although the history of Tolkien is sooooo HUGE its a bit overwhelming, feels like school history but only about a MILLION TIMES BETTER!!!
