Hey guys my Gen. Ursus is still in transit...

But one question about customizing the Hot Toys gorillas...

Have any of you tried to cut the long extra hair...or attempted to match the closest to the real characters using, mmm hair gel, hair spray...don't really know....have you? do u have pix?...any good results??

Congrats regarding Ursus. He doesn't really need a haircut because his helmet will cover his poufy hair. You will just have to trim the beard a little.

The closest thing to matching his hair is sold for $26 per square foot (plus $10 for s/h) from Feebay. It's called Mongolian fur, and only comes in black. In the movies, it's a super dark brown, a #2. I am still looking for that one stuffed animal that has the perfect dark brown hair with the same texture that the Hot Toys apes have.

If you comb the fur down with a brush, it pretty much stays in place. Use a very fine-toothed brush. The fur looks more natural than if you used a fine-toothed comb. If you use a hairspray, use sparingly, because this is not really hair--it's a type of fabric.

For those still looking for good 1/6 horses, Cottswold Collectibles offer several, including a re-issue of the old Marx nags(always liked Thunderbolt)...PS

Hi WM! I went on the Cots website and did not find them! I guess that I could call them though. Thanks for the heads up, Kent.

Guys you must visit Dorgs' cantina set at the Star Wars section.

Wow, those guys look very cool. Nice job.

I really love the face on this ape, did you make the sculpt.

I would love one of those to "hair up"

Thanks so much. Sadly, I'm not talented enough to sculpt. I'm more of a "kit basher" where I take different parts and try to blend (putty, rotary-tool, sand, drill, etc.) them together.

The head is a resin copy I made of a rare (and mega-expensive) Schlock sculpture by Matt Falls (I think). The Schlock sculpture is so rare, I definitely wanted to keep it as is, so I made a mold of the head and shoulders, like a bust. I’ve been reworking my resin Schlock heads to add more apes to my collection.

I’ve “haired up” one chimp using two 1/6 scale brown wigs I purchased from eBay. I learned what not to do and want to try to make another one. It would be better if I had a larger sheet of the fur to work with. I wrote the seller and asked for a small section or sheet of the fur, but he/she can’t understand what I am asking for. I can’t find that brown fur available in sheets that I can purchase.

I even purchased some brown “Craft fur” but the hair is too coarse and stiff to use for 1/6 scale ape hair/fur. I’ve considered purchasing the black Mongolian fur that Jessica referenced earlier.

When I get back home, I want to try a few suggestions from the group.

Thanks again.

I've always checked out Dorg's stuff, he is a master. The Star Wars fans have a great customizer's group, all very nice people.

I'm all about diorama's. It's great to have a figure but it's the environment that really helps to bring life to it.

I'm also glad to see that he's a fan of the Apes. :hi5:

I read that "Rise of the Apes was pushed back from its summer date of June 24th, 2011 to November 23, 2011 (2011-11-23). That sucks!:impatient:

Pompiato, did your General Ursus make it to you yet? Congratulations on your purchases. You will love them! They pose well, too. When my sister first saw this picture I took, she said, "Wait...is that you in costume?" I'm like WHAT?

Jess,

quick question for you. I am going to order sculpy firm. My question is, i want to start practicing. getting form correct, size, etc. I thought I would use the dragon heads for scale. I noticed you also sometimes sculpt on the head.

My question is, if I sculpt on a head, I cant throw it in the oven to make it hard? What do you do?

Would I make a mold of it>? If so, wouldnt it have to be hard? What materials do I use to make a mold?

Also, the head on the dragons, I can just pull it off from the body? Never did it before, I dont want to damage anything...

Thanks... Pat

Just boil it in the same way as you would boil an egg.
Trust me, this is the method I use all the time.
Not ONCE have I ever baked clay.
And yes, your dragon head will be perfectly fine too.
Hope that helps.
