I just broke my gorilla's knee trying to remove his boots. You know...for a toy that's over $100, you'd think they can make it out of better material. He's going to need to go to the emergency room ASAP. Too bad I'm busy today. My poor gorilla...

OMG.. I hope that wasn't because of the favor I asked of you...

I feel so bad now..:gah:

Hot Toys Gorilla?

My Hot Toys Dark Knight Batman's knee broke at one point. I was able to fix it with some glue but getting the rubber suit off was a huge pain.
You're right. For the amount of money they run, they should be a littler sturdier.

Yeah, Ray. Hot Toys gorilla.
No, Sixx. That doesn't make me feel any better. You still owe me big time!

I need to figure out how to repair it now. Can't believe the plastic they used is so cheap. I want to take apart the thigh so I can replace what broke. It looks like a lot of effort though...Gluing it will not fix it very well. The plastic part is still a very weak part. I want to remove that plastic part, and take a mold of it...and make a cast with super strong resin. Supposedly it's stronger than your average resin.

But that project will be for another day.

I want to take advantage of this tragedy and make 1:6 scale crutches and take a photograph of a broken soldier coming home. Wouldn't that make an awesome photograph? I'll have to put that on my list to do.

How is it broken, exactly? Depending on the break, you may be able to substitute the knee section from a TTL body, which will be less expensive and less work than recasting the piece. Also, I have yet to find a resin that is stronger than the original materials the manufacturers use. As a rule, resins tend to be more brittle than polystyrenes...PS

How and where exactly did the knee break? Can you take pix of the area? Dr. Galen is assembling the best simian minds to consult on the case but they need more info.

That would be cool. Make sure the crutches are as crude as can be. They are gorillas you know.

Here are photos of the break. I was thinking of using this for the resin cast: CR-900 HIGH STRENGTH CASTING RESIN Water-thin resin attains extra-high levels of strength and rigidity needed for castings with very thin sections (less than 3/16 inch). Mix equal volumes of parts A and B. 20 minute pot life; demold in 16 hours. Cures to near-white color. Reaches ultimate strength in 48 hours. 2 lb. kit contains approx. 26 fl. oz. total material. I have the product in hand--more pricey than the regular resin I have been buying but wanted to try it out. How do you think I should fix the break?

Just what the heck lies under there? A screw?

Good news, guys! There's actually a thread on OSW that shows you how to fix this type of problem.

Wow! In all my figures, I've never seen one break that way. Not having it in hand to see, i would think, if it were me, that I would first try a bonding agent [be it crazy glue, zap-a-gap, etc] first and if that failed I would look to replace the lower leg piece.

The problem with the tear is that even if it were superglued, it would come apart eventually because it's a high stress point. Anytime you'd bend the knee there is the risk of breakage again.

Per the OSW thread, I pried apart the thigh and was able to pop out the knee joint...but I still had to do further surgery and remove the other part from the leg. Part of the problem with this is that they are using very cheap plastic. I can't believe that they have used a screw with a type A point (had to look that up) instead of something with a round point...in essence drilling the hole at the same time the screw was installed, weakening the plastic piece. They should have pre-drilled. Anyway, that's enough adventures for the day. I'm going to weed the garden.

What you're describing is known as a self-tapping screw.A hole of smaller diameter is drilled, and the screw creates it's own threads. It's a fairly common process in the product development industry;saves trying to mold the threads, which is a pain in the butt, to say the least...PS

WM--I guess the threads help to keep the plastic in place, vs. if there was no thread and just a plain metal rod...still sucks though, that it would tear so easily. Not like I've got gorilla strength or nothin...

Hi Jess! I am sure that the company forsees these problems and when addressed with an inferior product and under the circumstances of safely trying to simply remove the boots, I am sure that they would compensate you with a replacement.

Well, I guess too that most collectors never take their monkeys out of the box, so they probably wouldn't blow out a knee until 30 years from now, when the plastic degrades further. I like to play with my toys. Some of them are still boxed up only because they are out of reach and I've got a lot of ongoing projects and when they're out of sight, out of mind.

And it's too bothersome to try to get compensation. It's easier and more rewarding to find a solution rather than waiting on someone's ok from high up on the food chain to give me a replacement body.

I have been in similiar situations and I find it rewarding to do both! I wish you luck and sorry this happened to you Jess! You are too good of a person and we are with you!:1-1: Now get on with it and make them do the right thing!
