you have to think why would they allow movies like the Matrix to be made if this reality was really a simulation or an illusion. kinda contradicts itself.

It's one of those things for which there is no reason to believe, and the second you entertain the possibility, anything becomes a possibility. It's arbitrary: not true, not false. It has no cognitive value (positive or negative) whatsoever.

Here's the basis for the logic:
If we can in the future create an accurate stable simulation of our universe then that simulation would be able to support "life" identical to ourselves who would then themselves seek to create a simulation of THEIR universe.
This cycle could repeat and repeat. If we find that our simulations are accurate then we can only assume that there is a possibility for infinite simulations (based on the repeating nature of life in the simulations creating their own simulations).
If there are an infinite number of simulations the odds that our universe is the "one true" universe are so tiny that it is an almost mathematical certainty that we ourselves live in a simulation.
