Scorpion problem in my house...

That sucks Nick.

first of all, when you bought the house, did they disclose that scorpions were on the property? I got out of a contract once I found out that the home had scorpions. It is supposed to be disclosed when you buy the house, not sure about new homes though.

Second, to try and stop them, I would definitely recommend putting down some of the Ortho Max. The long lasting (6-12 months) that is in granule form is what I use 2X a year. I don't have a scorpion problem, but I do have dogs, which eat dog food, which crickets are attracted to, which black widows are attracted to. So I put this down twice a year (actually, I should do it again pretty soon) using one of those hand spinning fertilizer spreaders. You got to spray it afterwards with a hose. Or better yet, if it ever rains here again, do it just before, but hopefully not to heavy of a rain as it will just get washed away. If I don't do this, crickets start coming into the house.

I'm not a big fan of the pest companies, I don't think they can do much more than we can if you're willing to do it yourself. I had a "tick" problem when I re-landscaped my backyard and turned over a bunch of earth and then ticks came out of the ground and into my house, as in I could see them crawling up the walls. I got a pest person out here, and $200 later, I still had the same problem, until I just went out and bought a bunch of chemicals and nuked the perimeter of my home and kept myself and the pets inside for a few days.

Third, and I hate to tell you this, but scorpions tend to live in nest underground. And sometimes your house can be built on top of them, and you'll be dealing with them forever. I don't know if you can really "get rid" of them if you are on top of a nest. I believe the nest's can encompass a large area underground, so it's not just one home that can be affected, it's the neighborhood. I would ask the neighbors if they have the same problems as you are seeing and what they do.

Fourth, go outside with a blacklight at night time to see how bad the problem is.

I've only seen one in my yard, and it was when I was re-doing my backyard. I stepped on it; it was a little baby one, but haven't seen any since. I did see a black widow spun up in a web on my pool pump, and that was also killed.

Also, if you have an ant problem ever, I highly recommend "Andro." That ???? is the bomb. Ants love it, and all you need is a bout a cup spread all around your yard, and they take it back to their nest, underground, and no more ants the next day.

Whoa, thanks for the advice Scott. I am going to pick up a black light and some kind of bug spray that will kill the scorpions food supply.

I want to know too. supposedly Devil76 knows, but I didn't ask any further.

that deserves its own inquiry thread...............MESA...........make it happen......:whip

:lol

I'm not the person to make it happen for fear that I'll be next.

Dave :gun Mesa :rip

no way...................:monkey3

you could even add a poll to it................:lol

He was given a fifth infraction for profanity directed as an insult to another member. As per the rules of the board his fifth infraction merited an automatic two-week ban.

Now then-- Back to the topic at hand... Thanks.

Another idea is to get some of those sticky rat traps. We found a scorpion in our house and put some of those out and caught additional scorpions almost nightly for a few days last fall. :horror

Any thoughts on Scorpions Neil? Maybe you don't see too many in the great white north. Thanks for clearing up the NAM questions.

I wish the best of luck to you man! Here's to you cleaning the house of scorpions. Your kids and of course you and the wife need to be safe.

Hit them with snowballs. In the middle of a snowstorm right now-- But jeez, finding one in your son's tub... That'd freak me out.

Remember what Indy told Mutt... It's the little ones that are deadly.

I know there are the poisonous and non poisonous variety. Which ones are these? Either way they got those claws and of course the stinger.

Thanks duder, good luck with the rage. For reals. I have to deal with it myself, I am a believer that you have to learn control...you must learn control. :wave

Don't think that wasn't the very first thing when my wife called me into the bathroom to kill the little bugger.

I've done the spray stuff, it's not as effective as the granules IMO. Unless you can literally see them and spray them. I would do the granules in the yard, around the block fence, etc. If you want to use spray, spray around the perimeter (inside by openings/windows/bathroom and all of outside) to keep up the pest barrier. I haven't had to do that since I resolved the tick problem. Read the labels to make sure "pet" and "kid" friendly, although how friendly can any poison be? If you have pets, most labels recommend keeping them out of contaminated area for 24" hours.

I was more joking about the blacklight. Some of my buds at work were taunting me to use the blacklight once I told them I saw one in my yard, but I didn't want to know the answer, so I never actually did it. But I hear you can be surprised at what you find, supposedly they light up irredescent green. And its the little ones that are the most dangerous I've heard.

By the way, I'm playing Fallout 3 (God, this game F'n ROCKS!!!) and those "Giant Scorpions" in the wasteland are a pain in the ass to kill. They can take like 5 combat shotgun blows to the body/stinger and still come after you, so be glad you don't have those in your house/yard.

Ok, granules it is then. :duff

I've heard good things about Fallout3, I think I might pick up the poor man's version BORDERLANDS. You on 360 or PS3? And thanks Jinxxy!

I'd call an exterminator. I'd also contact who you bought the house from and tell them they should pay for it.

Someone mentioned chickens. Actually, ducks or geese are better with the bigger buggies. I used to have one years ago to keep our garden pest free.

Forgot to mention...

Baby ones don't glow. Good luck killing them.:)

I seriously didn't know that...

We see them all the time here in Vegas, just get an exterminator or buy some spray at Lowe's/Home Depot.

They actually do glow, I used to have a few of the Emperor Scorpions as pets (the really large black ones, relatively harmless); they looked cool displayed under the black light.

Bite the heads off and drink the secret serum it will make you one of their own and then you be able to command them with your mind.

True story btw...
