I happened to catch an advanced screening of Terminator: Salvation last night. This is my review. Okay, for starters, there will not be any spoilers. I will keep this as simple and generic as possible. I have not read or seen any of the spoilers of this movie, nor have I read or seen anything more about this movie other than what was shown in the trailers. So, I went in with a pretty clean slate.
My overall opinion/grade of the movie is a solid B, no plus, no minus, just a B.
There is good action (of course) but more on a "Mad Max" scale than an epic scale. Whereas you see more gorilla type warfare than epic battles as seen in say Saving Private Ryan, in the beginning of Gladiator, Braveheart, etc. Not as many Endo's in the movie that I thought there would be. However, HK's get some pretty good use. There were some very predictable scenes and some scenes where I was thinking to myself, "really, that's kind of dumb and not very believable". In my opinion, the character of Marcus Wright steals the movie. A cool and likeable character, even more so than Bale's Connor. I know that Connor's role will become bigger and better in the next two movies, but for him to be outdone by Marcus and Kyle Reese's charaters was a surprise to me. There is a good cameo too. I did have some trouble with the inconsistencies with what we have seen in the past movies and what is shown in this movie, as well as some of the story in this movie in general. The script is good, but not great.
Not an over use of special effects in this movie, but a good balance. (I had read that Bale refused to sign on until the script was written so that it could be done as a play on stage). They do a good job of creating a realistic post-apocalyptic California, particulary Los Angeles (from what is seen of it).
So that's about it. Without putting in any spoilers, it is more dfficult to give you more than that. It was enjoyable and a must see, but if you go in with high expectations, you may be a little disappointed. Go in expecting to see a good movie, but don't expect to be blown away.
