English dub though, no trying to keep up reading while watching the movie, and digital release, first time a Toho Godzilla US release has had that, iTunes has had a few random movies online but never in conjunction with a release and not a large selection.

Tried to rewatch... Yeah, it's too messy. I want to like it because the good intent and themes are kinda there, most of Godzilla related visuals are ok, some of the actors are good in their roles... but I just can't. The only two things that could slightly improve it for me - original sound instead of crappy sampling and Akira If-u-kube's music.

When I saw this... I had to ruin the second form's design for everyone else!

So, gave it a second watch... and I'm pretty sure this was just another trolling project.
The obvious controversy, the lack of coherent story, the overall anime feel, the use of outdated sound...
None of it works as an actuall movie if you put some thoughts into it, and you absolutely has to because it's not an action movie.

Well played, Anno senpai. Well played.

From Nikkei Style interview with Keiji Ota:
Head of Film Business & Film Division / Manager of Film Business Department at Toho Co. Ltd.

"Shin Godzilla was a huge hit, but instead of doing the obvious and making Shin Godzilla 2, instead think about a world that can be used for a long time. I’d rather make a World of Godzilla."

...

In other words, they want to start new series of films in/after 2021 and ShinG isn't part of it.

Well, as interesting as a Shin sequel would be, given the ending, I’m not sure a proper one would really feel like a Godzilla movie, Shin is fairly self contained, but it sets a bar for what looks like Toho setting up a series of connected films, I just hope they plan it out and have stories thought out enough where it’s no another run of reboots every 2 movies like the Millennium series.

No idea why I put off watching this for so long. All I've heard was good things.

But I kept thinking about that horrible turd with Bryan Cranston and Kick Ass guy and just went "yawwwn."

Well, I'm barely ten minutes in and had to immediately stop and post here how effing good this is already. There's more suspense and excitement in the first ten minutes than that entire lousy American version. The editing is insane!! We already knew Anno was a mad genius from Evangelion, but seeing it in live action is awesome!

4 years on the tail still freaks me out. Shows the next stage of evolution for the creepiest Godzilla yet.

I recently watched this film, and wow what a fantastic Godzilla movie, it definitely fits the modern times. Not only that, it's a great monster/disaster movie. I liked how the film is presented, in that the main character of the film is essentially Japan and they show it brilliantly in the large ensemble of government workers, scientists, military personnel, etc. Godzilla is depicted on such high power that he is scary in the context of the film.

Damn this godzilla is disgusting. That?s so nasty to look at. As I said. This Godzilla was like a walking mindless zombie rather than a living creature with a goal. It pretty much was a lumbering brain dead thing that destroyed ****. Also it probably fused with that man from the beginning of the movie, hence the face on his tail
