so has anyone been able to get the batteries out of 3po. really want to remove them so they dont leak. if anyone figure it out can you post here or PM me. thanks

I like the light up feature for the eyes but I wish there was alternate head where you could permanently display C3PO with they eyes lit up - kind of like the Kotobukiya Artx 1/10 scale version below.

It's kind of annoying having to open up my display cabinet and tap C3P0's head everytime I want the eyes to light up (I know, first world problems!).

Also as bobafett108 mentioned, there's also a potential battery leakage problem which makes me wary of leaving them in.

Got in C-3PO yesterday and overall I'm extremely pleased with him. Unfortunately I did end up with a broken off pinkie finger so I'll need a replacement; but aside from what I hope is a random QC issue the figure seems great.

The weathering does seem less awful in hand... or I may have gotten one that was done slightly better. I never looked at the figure and though... "wow that weathering looks like ****". However, I do plan to add a bit more weathering, if not completely remove what's there and start over.

The finish on C-3PO is great, it's a touch dark but I think I prefer it as opposed to the overly bright Tamashii. He feels light, but not ridiculously light like the battle droids. I think if I didn't have the Tama next to me it wouldn't have been as noticeable, but picking up one right after the other does give the Sideshow one an unfavorable feel :lol

Articulation between the two is a wash, The Sideshow has an improved range at the shoulders, but less ability for the arms to straighten (due to the fake pistons). Hips and knees seem about the same, but the ball jointed ankle is better on the Sideshow figure allowing you to get just the right angle so the feet can sit flush. The joints on the Tamshii move easier, but I find the knees and feet on the Tamashii (at least mine) feel a bit loose which I assume is due to the weight. While the articulation on the Sideshow is not quite as smooth everything stays in place once posed.

As for the overall appearance I prefer the Sideshow figures look and proportions... I think both have their inaccuracies, but the Sideshow figures works a bit better for me. Also the the light up function is much nicer looking and easier to use as it's just a single touch sensor on the back of the head.

No denying the die cast and weight of the Tamashii figure is a strong selling point and I don't think I'd say it's worth replacing the Tamashii. But if you want two then get the Sideshow, if you don't have one yet and are on the fence I'd go for the Sideshow.

I Did notice some differences on the smaller details especially on the arms... the Tamashii is more raised and defined; which looks nice, but not sure which is more accurate

I prefer the lights of the Sideshow, but the wires look nicer on the Tamashii

On the shelf I also prefer the Sideshow figure... but both look great with the recent Hot Toys figures and Deluxe R2-D2

Great review and comparison, galactiboy! Much appreciated. :clap

Seeing the comparisons between the eyes makes me realize I really need to do the eye mod for the Tama 3PO. Color is all wrong.

Great job, GB!

I have to say, though, except for the un-modded eyes, I think I prefer the Tamashii in every one of the comparison pics....except the wallet comparison shot which you graciously omitted:

That's Tamashii on the right...

3PO just arrived and I am impressed with Sideshow's rendition.

- The gold finish is actually quite good in person. The weathering application is definitely less on mine than on many of the previously posted pics.

- Fortunately, no broken parts. (The exclusive arm stump has the gold part separated. Not sure if it's supposed to be like that, but can be attached with no problem.

- Instructions say to remove the head by grasping the neck only. There's no way I can do that without getting the head sculpt as well. Will try again later.

- Articulation is extremely limited. I wasn't expecting to have 3PO able to do jumping-jacks but arm poses are very limited.

- Those thumbs are really wonky. The problem is how they designed the knuckle or bend, which is like the other fingers and not facing inwards, towards the palm.

- Magnetic restraining bolt is not so magnetic. Magnet is weak, so if you miss the tiny spot on the torso, it will slide off.

- Final personal verdict: 8 out of 10. Excellent rendition of 3PO but just a few knocks to bring it down a little. (lack of articulation, wonky thumbs, magnetic restraining bolt, head removal and pretty bare boned.)

Very happy to pick this one up and looking forward to Leia's release to complete my "A New Hope" collection!!

Pics to follow.

This is a serious question.

How is anyone happy with the overall feel, weight and quality of this? Showed a friend and he started to laugh at how cheap it was and said "its like one of those ten dollar toys." It was $18.63 to ship the tiniest 1/6th box I have ever received and it weighed nothing. I then paid $230 for what feels like a Hasbro Titan Hero Series figure. This has better paint, articulation and lights though of course. Doesn't feel like a $250 toy, but it looks like a $250 toy.

At the very least.... it looks good on the shelf, I guess that is what matters. Turning on the lights are very easy and a nice feature if the batteries don't corrode. I don't really have an issue with the weathering as it is hardly noticeable on the shelf. He looks great with the other Hot Toys and from looks he fits perfectly with them.

I am mad that I paid that much for something that feels like this. On the other hand... I am happy that I paid that much for a nice looking C-3PO to be on my shelf. My feelings are split on this. :dunno

Great review!

One figure away from total satisfaction!

Thanks :duff And I know right... I have a custom Leia; but she just can't hang with this caliber of figure.

Walrusman?

Oh yeah... good point. We need him to come with a removable arm and both the hoove and wolfman hands :lecture The exclusive should be the severed head:

Yeah, I really dropped the ball on getting that mod done... one day I'll do it and that will really help the Tamashii look better.

Nice indepth review gb, I think we all just need to have both of them:wink1:

That's the direction I'm going :lol

Yeah, cost is definitely a big factor... at $400 the Tamashii figure was way overpriced. When he dropped to under $300 that was a good time to snag one and you do get a greater sense of worth when you feel how heavy and solid he is. I gave both to my wife and she was initially impressed by the Sideshow figure, but then as soon as she felt the Tamashii she was swayed.

I definitely wouldn't recommend paying 2x the price for the Tamashii as I think the Sideshow does look more accurate, but if you could get a used one for a similar price it would definitely be just a matter of preference.

Weight always has a preceived value to it... but I've learned that it's more about what the piece looks like rather than what it's made out of. And with a figure like C-3PO you have to keep in mind that there is very little reuse (aside from a few future variants) so some of the high cost is in the development of the body and producing these unique pieces.

Hasbro can certainly produce a pretty nice figure for a lot less... but they'll make 10s of thousands of them; not sure what the ES on C-3PO is but it's most likely under 5,000. And to be fair Sideshow clearly did their homework on this figure and delivered a very accurate, poseable and functional figure of C-3PO. I can't see much improvement over what they did here.

:goodpost:

I received this figure yesterday as well to pair with my R2 for display with the rest of the SW HT collection, and I have to say that they look great paired together. The detail is really nice on the figure. I don't really have much to complain about as to me, there really isn't much with 3PO. I mean you look at the figure and yeah, it's 3PO. The only feature I can think of that any figure would include is his eyes lighting up, which they do.

SSC I think did a nice job with this figure.

What's the Tamashii 'eye mod'?

You can slip a piece of translucent orange plastic (from a file folder or camera gels? i think) behind the eyes to give it the correct color. It's supposed to be really easy, reversible, and there are good directions somewhere in the Tama thread. I'll meet you over in that thread and we can dig them up.
