I don't think the Hoth coat ever looked blue except for some possibly bad VHS transfers or the memory of the Hasbro toys.

Interesting. So you think its brown. I remember this argument a while ago and a friend of mine popping in an old VHS tape and pointing to Han " See! Blue."

No it was blue. Basically you've got one side that looks at the movie, production stills, stop-motion puppet on tauntaun, and the Kenner figure and sees a blue coat and others who have noticed that a brown coat is making the rounds as part of a SW museum and are suddenly claiming that that was the color everyone saw all along. :monkey3

You can ask that after Hoth Leia makes an appearance. :lecture

I've seen that coat you're talking about.

And then Phil Tippett colored the stop motion puppet based on the Kenner figure?

No, but that model has little to no bearing on the actual costumes and other 1:1 props in the movie. It was made to be shot under modeling lights for a specific look. Look at the coloring on the rest of the model, including any facial features. The Tauntaun also looks nothing like the 1:1 props.

In other words, the stop-motion model is irrelevant in trying to derive the origins of the 1:1 props.

Ugh. Go look at good quality production still photos.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter, you know what? Because Sideshow has made a BROWN coat and everyone that wants a blue one can suck it and hope for an exclusive or get cracking on their color removal and dying skills. ;)

Vader without a widow's peak. As if.

Is someone floating an argument this was a special edition revision as well? The helmet changed between movies, just like every single other prop, including saber hilts, colors, trooper helmets, armor, clothing, ships, etc. Some people, such as myself, think Vader's ANH costume looks like crap compared to the next two movies (inner robe OVER shoulder armor? WTF!)

Han is Correllian. It should be Correllian blue. Like his pants in ANH and his Bespin Jacket. Han prolly keeps his winter coat in the Falcon for hostile environments like Hoth. I don't see any of the other Rebel soldiers wearing coats that look like Han's.

"As for Han Solo’s Hoth Coat; when originally shooting the Hoth scenes the Coat that Harrison Ford was wearing was a dyed with a mix of Burgundy, Blue, and Brown. The original coat before dying was grey. But the grey was too light and blended into the snow making it hard to see.
Irvin Kershnern the director of Empire also wanted Han Solo’s colors to be different from the Rebel alliance colors to distinguish him from the Rebel’s.
If you look at the jacket today it has deteriorated some and the color has faded greatly. It now looks grayish brown / purple in color.
If you look at stills from the film, sometimes the coat appears blue sometimes brown depending on the location and the lighting for the scene.
Hope this helps.

I got this info from Mary, one of Steven J. Sansweet’s assistants."

I saw this same display when in DC when they were at the Smithsonian years ago. I always assumed it was blue from the film and because of the figure. I personally like the blue better but for some reason lucasfilm is officially calling it brown. Dunno.

Have I walked into a alternate universe where the people of Sideshow Freaks are nitpicking the color of a jacket instead of a Harrison Ford sculpt?

Summer 1980 and winter 1982 (some 5 times total). Then for the umpteenth time in the special edition flavor in 1997 (along with the other two movies, twice each).

You know, this whole coat thing is not a conspiracy. I just kind of assumed that everyone else could tell that the coat appeared blue-ish when there was BLUE LIGHTING in the same scene.

That could be a replica jacket made after the fact. Looks too new to be screen worn.

Do you like your red herring fried or baked?

If you didn't see the film in its original run, then you've never seen it in its original state. It doesn't much matter how it looks in any other incarnation. Because in star Wars, Darth Vader had a widow's peak and a rougher looking costume. Han Solo shot Greedo in cold blood. The Rebo band had three members, Anakin's ghost was old, and Han's Hoth jacket was blue. We're not talking about changes between films. We're talking about changes to the films themselves, for whatever reason.

If you never saw it, you're missing an indispensable appendage for remaining upright.
