Re: Sideshow Announcing new Premium Art Prints collection

What a slippery slope these prints are??? At first it was only superman now I am making an exception for power girl (house of El prints). Next thing I know every inch of wall space in my house will be covered in SSC prints (..and Sports Memorabilia)

Re: Sideshow Announcing new Premium Art Prints collection

What is the reason that Marvel's aren't framed?

Re: Sideshow Announcing new Premium Art Prints collection

Probably didnt because it doesnt.look near as good as the control art

They may do that so "regular" statue owners don't see the EX and think it would not look as good with their piece. Have they ever displayed an EX with the print?

Re: Sideshow Announcing new Premium Art Prints collection

I really think these prints are beautiful but the price point is way too high. I've met some of these artists and some even bigger name artists and most of them will draw you an original piece for close to that price. The artists sell prints like these at their booths for $25 signed. I mean it's basically a signed and numbered poster. I think maybe $50 would be a reasonable price. Or offer a not signed and numbered version for $25. They keep selling lot hot cakes though so what do I know? ha ha.

These are much bigger prints than the ones you can get at conventions. Plus they are on better paper and have a limited edition size. As for original art, I don't know what some of these artists that are doing the SS prints charge but Artgerm is around $1200-1500 per commission.

You're talking 11x17 compared to 18x24 and does the paper quality and the fact that it's numbered really matter once it's in a frame? It's just a printed picture after all not original art. All that aside Sideshow could not number these or have them signed and easily sell them at the same quality for $25. Hell they used to give you the print with the EX. I've also seen Artgerm's artwork go for over 1k but I've seen it go as low as $500 too. You can buy his prints for $50 or less signed. I'm not trying to start an argument bud. If you think $239.99 plus shipping is a fair price and you're happy with it that's all that matters. I personally would rather pay $500-$1000 for an original piece or buy say this Adam Hughes poster on ebay right now signed for $39.99. Or buy the same poster for $9.99 and get him to sign it myself.$_57.jpg

Btw GeneralZodLives completely off subject your collection is very impressive. I need to post pictures of mine.

Re: Sideshow Announcing new Premium Art Prints collection

SS unframed and framed prices aren't bad. They are signed by artist and have edition size to them. This does matter to collectors, why else would both framed catwoman and ivy sold for $1k last week on ebay. Obviously it's rare and collectible. The paper and ink used is also of high quality. I have both convention exclusives from artgerm and SS and I can tell you that the ones sold in convention for $25 comes no where close

I'm glad you're happy with them. That's what collecting is all about. I think the artwork is beautiful you'll get no disagreement there and I'm sure you're right about telling the difference between the convention and SS prints. To me though they're just art printed on paper. It doesn't matter if it's art printed on the Shroud of Turin or art printed on paper from Staples. It could also be signed and numbered 1/10 and it's still just a printed picture. It'd be like buying a very good Van Gogh knockoff. In the end it's just not real. I guess if people are paying 1k for them than it's a good investment though. Like I said before if I'm going to spend that much money I want the real thing. Just a difference in opinion is all and obliviously if people are paying that much for them not too many people think like me :).

Different strokes for different folks. I have a decent collection of prints ranging from $10-$20 signed convention prints to thousand dollar canvas giclees so I'm not an elitist when it comes to collecting them. However, when I compare one of my Artgerm convention prints to a Sideshow Artgerm print there's a huge difference in quality IMO. For the pieces I have framed or plan to frame, I generally prefer a larger, crisper image on thicker, high-quality paper or canvas. There's nothing wrong with wanting to get a signed poster like the Power Girl image you posted, but there will be a pretty big difference when you see it framed compared to one of the SS prints framed. Poster paper is delicate--easy to bend/crease and, because of the glare it's going to throw off, you'll see every defect. The overall look when displayed is going to look worse, again, IMO. I think the cheaper, signed prints are fine--I've got a ton of them. They're affordable, don't take up a bunch of wall space if you hang them up, and you can build up a pretty big collection quickly. Generally though, I'm not going to spend the money to get them framed and allow them to take up valuable wall space--they go in portfolios. Also, the $239.99 price you quote is for the print and frame from Sideshow. The print by itself is usually $89.99--which isn't that bad for the size, quality of paper, and limited ES.

When it comes to original art, the prices you see are always going to vary depending on the popularity of the artist, size/uniqueness of the piece, and the time it takes them to draw it. As an example, Ed McGuinness will draw you a quick small Batman head for $50.00 at conventions. Instead of getting one of those, I commissioned a page-sized half-figure Terence Stamp General Zod from him. It cost $400 and I'll get it when he's finished with it (which so far it's been a 2-month wait). Artgerm does the same thing. His convention sketches are nothing compared to the commissions he does. He can have around a 1-2 year wait list and it's going to cost you $1200-1500 if you get it directly from him, but the quality is going to be better than a quick line sketch you get at his booth.

In the end, it all comes down to personal preference but I'd say you get what you pay for with the SS prints.

Thanks! It's definitely an addiction.
