Fellow Collectors,

I couldn't find a topic on this so I thought I'd start one as I need help :/

My Sideshow Wolf Predator Mask's lenses are rusting šŸ˜”

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Look forward to hearing from you all

Cheers

Dave

I want to say a fine wire brush, but that may be too harsh or have an uneven look. You may be able to try on the back side to see how it looks first then add some light oil so it won't happen again.

Hey,

Thanks for your reply... Unfortunately I can't do it on the back side as it is all molded in and there is no way to remove the lenses without damaging the mask:/
A wire brush may do the trick?
Do you think the rust is sat on top of the original silver colour or has eaten it away?... because my understanding was when metal rusts it theoretically means it is being 'eaten' or am I wrong?

I was thinking of getting an ultra fine silver paint pen and re-colouring the lenses? What do you think?

Either repaint or take a metal scourer across the rusted bits. It depends if it's real metal or painted.

I think you mean bare metal? I have the DX version and you can access it from the back(although it is aluminum so would not rust anyway). A scour pad is not going to have the control of a brush, but you can give it a shot, worst case you repaint with a rust inhibitor paint.

Don't know for sure if this would work but you might want to try a metal or silver polish. It should remove tarnish from the metal. It might not be rust per say but oxidation on the metal. This might be gentler on the lenses also. :dunno

U have to remove the rust, not just cover it up. U can find gentle rust removers in an automotive aisle or store. Then, color it with a silver paint if you want. In any even, after coloring ( or not ), apply a thin layer of automotive clear-coat, they sell those in stores ( small bottle with a brush or pen applicator ).

Sounds like a plan to me ;) thanks for the advice.

Some paints have rust inhibitors that should do fine without using chemicals that could mess with the mask. I would still like to see it stay bare metal if possible as that should look better than silver paint, then you could apply a clear to it instead of a light oil coating if you wanted.

Bare metal would be a preferred solution. I do wish sideshow would of used aluminium as that wouldn't rust.
I want to do a professional job on the restoration of these lenses... So plenty of homework before I touch the mask.

What do you guys think to the rust actually adding 'worn' look to the mask?

I don't usually mind authentic patina and like you said it would add realism. In this particular case however I assume their metals would not be rusting. Taking that into consideration I don't think I would leave it on this piece. I still think the light or medium wire brush is the way to go.

I've just had a look at mine, it also has some very minor rusting but you really have to look to see it. First thing I would do is contact Sideshow to see what exactly it is made of. That should tell you (us) whether to paint or polish.... in fact I'll shoot them a message now.

This is still the best SS piece I own IMO, I paid well over the odds but love it.

Here you go....

"I have reached out to our production team to ask for some advice. I was told that you should start with warm water. If that does not do the trick, you may want to try Simple Green. Our production team does not recommend a stronger solvent than that.

Please let me know if I can assist you further!

Best regards,

Kathy Harter"
