As a modern game, it deserves the poor reviews. Set against the standards of modern games, and their control layouts and fluidity...it just doesn't stack up. However, if you go in with a certain mindset, you can enjoy it. For instance, I consider myself a veteran of the Survival Horror genre, and I play classic RE games regularly. Comparatively, the controls are as "bad" as those games. I say bad because that's usually a major complaint on those games from a modern perspective. To me though, they're almost second nature. So contrast it with classic games instead of modern games. Use a similar mindset, and you may like it. If not, it's completely understandable.

The story is actually pretty good. The environments have great atmosphere and there's definitely some genuine disturbing moments and great game events. It is slow and sometimes tough to get through. but I liked it better than Homecoming.

I love old school Survival Horror and I've been into the genre probably just as long as you and as long as the genre has been around.

I might pick it up at some point, I passed on Homecoming since a lot of people hated it.

Pyramid Head is in it right? Not just that secret ending?

Pyramid Head is not in Downpour. They have a "rip-off" character called The Bogeyman though. His design is neat, but uninspiring.

I've played it and it's the worst game in the series. Even worst than Shattered Memories and Origins (they've been done on the portable consoles, so let's give em a chance; even thou SM is not terrible, but trying to rebuild the SH foundation in some very twisted and lazy way having some weird action parts). But SH:H is REALLY bad. Almost in everything, it's just not SH and not survival horror at all. I even liked the Cold Fear as horror more than that lazy and unoriginal piece of $h1t!

Biojex, SHDP got some very bad reviews, but as far as I see it's not so terrible and even have some connection to the original series. I guess, I should play it this summer after passing my exams (starting to get second high education this year, the cinema plot writer).

I personally love Downpour.
Silent Hill is one of my favorite franchise next to Resident Evil.
Downpour is 3rd on my list in the franchise.
SH2 is my favorite, then SH1, then Downpour.

I'm pretty open minded whenever I watch a remake of a movie, or play another another franchise game, I just believe sometimes a lot of movies or games get bashed cause of unfair comparison.
Its like people want to feel that nostalgia when they first played the game, but if there's any difference to what they first experience, then the game is unfairly judged.

I play it for what it is, and if you dont go around trying to find that nostalgia when you first play SH, I think most people would appreciate the games even more.
Sure there are flaws, but heck, even the masterpiece games have many, but are often overlooked cause they are revolutionary for its time.

I've played just about every horror games made genre as its my favorite genre, but there were actually several times in this game that I was creeped out.
Bottomline, the game is fun, has a cool story, very much worthy of the Silent Hill Franchise.

Downpour was the first game in a while that actually had me tense and scared while exploring. And when I say "in a while", I mean in like 10 years. Because I felt so helpless due to the difficult combat system. That sounds bad, but it actually improved the experience for me.

Exactly, its isnt devil may cry where you hit combos and juggle monsters in the air, its just basic hit and flee. Nothing fancy, just swing at whatever's in your way and get out of there.

I appreciate how they do force you to melee, since there's hardly any bullets, and whatever weapon you're using, there's always a threat that at some point, it'll break. So there's a great amount of tension, hoping not to run into a mob of monsters and have that weapon finally break.
But on top of it all, I enjoyed the story line which is the most important aspect.
I would love it if the same developer makes another SH.

I got so fearful thinking my weapon was going to break at any second. I love that game mechanic. Adds that extra bit of uncertainty to really ups the tension. You could literally end up with no way to defend yourself besides fisticuffs. And that was basically suicide.

I'm just like you. I love the old school survival horror and really miss those days of playing through them. Old school Silent Hill, RE and even Parasite Eve are some of my favorite games ever. I still remember vividly opening up my Playstation 2 and Silent Hill 2 on Christmas morning.

Such great memories. I haven't played Downpour yet. I couldn't decide what system to buy it for and then I just got busy and haven't gone back to purchase it.

As for Homecoming,... I know a lot of people say it's not that great or that it doesn't compare to Silent Hill 2, but I thoroughly thoroughly enjoyed it.

Back when the game came out I read Ign's 4.5 review on Homecoming and when the reviewer got to the part where he talked about the horrible melee controls I knew I'd love the game... :lol

If you love old school survival horror than you should definitely not pass on Homecoming IMO.

Your entitled to your opinion Raptor but I completely disagree. :monkey3

Yeah, I actually didn't mind Homecoming. In controlled the best out of most Silent Hill's. My only nag against it really is that the story felt a little bit like a fan script. Whatever that means :lol

LOL! What a pointless fan-service.
Sure there was nothing like that in the game.
So stylish! :D

Also, give some attention to the face, it has teeth and it's more bloody. So the head is different too.

They should have called it Christmas Stockings version.

I'll stick with the normal version.

Silent Hill 3 is getting some love next (bottom right corner).
