Weta Smaug is looking nice! But my days of spending big amounts on statues are over. I have become very selective about what to buy. The minute you go ahead and buy a collectible, it's only worth half of what you've put down for it. At least that's the way it often goes. Was like that with most of the later (very nice) SSC/Weta statues. I guess the ridicules high edition sizes - at least for 'high end' collectibles - are partially responsible for that. It bugs me that most of the SSW/Weta LotR statues can be found today for a fraction of the original price. Hopefully these new Weta pieces for 'The Hobbit' have a better future, more stable anyway.

Not sure if woodsy or guru have seen the Nazgul piece in person but I didn't have any sense of Eowyn being lost in the piece on my first viewing. I actually prefer that piece to Smaug. Can't wait to get both.
In some ways I also prefer it to Smaug.

But, I already have *plenty* of LOTR pieces, one of them is FBvsEagle which I LOVE. And I do not have room for 2 pieces with such wingspans.

Also, every time I looked at Smaug at SDCC, I kept thinking how dang iconic it is. Seeing Howe's most famous painting (to me) in beautiful 3D... after considering if for a long while (due to the cost) it's a must have for me.

And Matt- Me too! Have the perfect spot picked out in the entertainment center. No struggling to make room for this piece. Gonna look great. :D

The only thing i'm struggling with for this beautiful piece is, the new display cabient i'm gonna have to buy. i wanna get a glass display cabinet with wooden frame to go with that fantastic base:D.

Solid wood base = :rock

Accompanying art book by John Howe/Weta = :rock :rock

Knowing that all in person shots of this WERE actually the faux bronze version (as opposed to the real bronze) = :rock :rock :rock :rock :rock :rock

I think something else to consider is what you have referred to before, namely the oversaturation factor. These pieces have enough competition as is with SS's PF, LSB, dio., and now maquette lines. Add in Weta's environments, shields/crowns/tiara's, and their yet to be produced 1/12th scale character/dio. line and I think it safe to say we will all be struggling with too many lines, not enough money or space. As if this weren't bad enough we also have Weta's Hobbit statue and busts line coming shortly....and who knows which Hobbit licences SS will also be obtaining. Eventually, something has to give. There is no way all these lines will be able to survive and I hate to say it [and hope I'm wrong], but I can see the JH collection being the first casualty. :(

Yes, that's what I was getting at in the new maquette line, tho most seemed to take as a worry over old Weta items dropping in value and that's ones 'investment' would be worth less and less.
But it was really more about the shear volume of collecting choice and if the customer base is large enough for it all. Lets face it, all the SSW stuff is still out there, its not just going to disappear. And as you say, we all have limited money and space, so choices have to be made, dependent on how long one has been in the game and what one already owns. I've said it some other place, but I actually think the SS LSB will be the first line to go. Given a choice between a very well done new maquette or a new LSB, I have a feeling the LSB will loose out.
As for Weta, I don't think the shields/helms, etc are a problem, due to having a pretty small footprint and being fairly cheap. So far the environments are just and extension of what everyone wanted back in the day, so there good. But yes, the JH statues may not get past the couple we have, with maybe one or two more. But will that really be a bad thing, as people focus more on just getting and keeping choice items.

No, I've not seen either in person and doubt I ever will see the Nazgul one and won't see Smaug till it ships and I get mine. All that have seen it in person, say it's not a problem and no doubt, this is a case of the difference of actually seeing a statue in 3D, compared to a flat 2D photo.

In some ways I also prefer it to Smaug.

I've also got the FB vs Eagle, which yes, is an amazing statue and as such, a main reason that I don't really need or want the Nazgul one, the wingspans are just too much.

Plus, everyone that has seen the 'sample' one just says how amazing it is in person. I know the companies like to talk about the statues being 'museum quality', but for all the reasons above, it's something like this that you could actually see being in a museum and it not looking out of place.

But even if I am totally wrong, I'm still going to be really happy to own one. :D

You're not, it was incredible. :drool

Sweet beans and rice! Received this update about my order:

weta said:
Good news - the US bound shipment of Smaug Faux Bronze’s is about to arrive at our US Warehouse.

This means we will be processing your payment next week [19th – 23rd July] and releasing your order to our US distributor for dispatch.

Really excited now! :) I've avoided a lot of stuff so I can get this guy. Now if only the 'stand' I plan to put him on gets here too...

You lucky yanks, you always get stuff first......

If it's any consolation I'll be waiting awhile myself after cancelling my order. Just can't justify paying retail for an item that hasn't sold out 11 month's after pre-orders began. I'll wait 'til Weta starts clearing these out or until I find a good deal elsewhere. I'd love for this line to succeed, but I think you can stick a fork in it....it's done. I can see Weta giving this line one more shot during SDCC, but if it doesn't fare any better than the first two....game over. :(

Sadly I had to cancel the Eowyn and Nazgul as well. It's a fine piece, but I just couldn't justify the cost of having yet another Fell Beast with wings spread. I wouldn't know where to put it. I think John Howe's work is awesome, so it would be great to see what else might come from this line.

Agreed. Both statue's look great, and I'm sure any other one's would look great too, but I think Weta killed themselves with the pricing. :cuckoo:

How's the quality? Heavy polystone?

IT IS VERY HEAVY!!! The base is solid Wood!!! So that makes it really heavy, box is huge! Says 33lbs.

I'm not sure what it is made of...seems solid, but the "Fins" are slightly flexible, so they won't snap off easily!

BUT I LOVE IT! Very cool and lots o' detail!!! and HUGE! Way bigger then I was expecting!

Holly freakin' hell, that looks amazing......

Now that's going to make my wait seem even longer.

Woodsy, I have a feeling you may regret cancelling :p

I never regret saving money guru, and I have a feeling I'm going to save a ton of it when I finally do buy this one. :wink1:

Well, first you'd have to save 10% at least, since that's what you'll loose in Weta Dollars.

Considering I've saved as much as 60-70% by waiting for some SS LOTR collectibles, and upwards of 90% in re-aquiring some SSW pieces....I think I'll take my chances. :wink1:

Nothing's going to change the fact that Weta has sold on average less than one of these per day since pre-orders began, and unless Weta drastically changes the pricing on this line, it's dead....if it isn't dead already. :(

True, I have a feeling it maybe dead, but still, I'll be very surprised if you can get it for 60% less, but I guess we will see.
