It's not that hard to get a break in a small country. And if what you write makes sense, you keep getting employed purely by hearsay. It's surprisingly easy to get to the international festival-going stage and jury memberships from there. (Too easy, in fact, judging by the knowledge of some people I've met over the years.)

I would imagine it would be harder in the States, though.
