Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Curious if any 40+ place any of the PT or Disney SW above the OT? No matter how much I might enjoy RO or TFA there at a different point in my life to place them anywhere close to OT!! When I see anyone place new movies above ROTJ I don’t get it!

I am a member of that set....to use the Wor Gar scale.....

ESB

ANH

ROTJ
ROTS
RO

They are close , but they don’t beat it out.

Just joined that club this month. I’m tempted to say that maybe I’d put Rogue One ahead of ROTJ, but I kind of go back and forth on that. But I wouldn’t put the other Disney movies in that category, even TFA and Solo which I really liked. I also enjoyed ROTS, but I wouldn’t put the prequels anywhere near the OT in terms of which ones I like the best.

Yeah there were a number of chatty kids at my mid afternoon showing yesterday, looking forward to watching it with grown ups (assumedly) at a later showing tonight.

Reminiscence Therapy in-freakin-deed! :lol
This one sequence was so much more starwarsy than everything they've released since 2013 combined, despite the fact that it looked very modernized.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Is this the first Star Wars movie without
R2 and 3PO or did I miss them?

Maybe to this generation...the only time my generation wanted to watch someone else play a video game was when we had to wait our turn in the arcade....

I mean ....buy they game and play it yourself?

No?

My kids can’t explain why they like it either....at least in a way this old man understands.

I would never sit an watch someone play a board game on video or real life either.

I can explain it. I thought long about this. Ive read some stuff,

Those hour long videogame videos can serve as a virtual friend. In a way they make you feel like if u were playing the game at home with a friend.
Hour long Podcast vids work the same way, they make your mind like u are in the compaby of a friend.

I first discovered this when.people use those hours long videos on trips or in airplanes or stuff like that.
And i notice my little cousin playing those vids when hes bored because he never hangs out with any friends. Some people really do watch these like if watching a friend.
Specially today that so many people are so disconnected.

Other kids watch these game vids because they are Too lazy to play the game so they rather watch the video.
The games still look cool and the story is good so they rather have someone do the work for them .
I have to admit i did this twice. I did it with the ghostbusters game.

And the last reason is because some kids cant afford games so they watch it free

Yeah, my buddy and I both turned to each other when she took the mask off. Was also a little unclear if they were trying to confuse the audience about her being Harrelson’s daughter or something, kinda strange casting.

Wow - these were the same in-theater conversations we had. Right after the Maya thing, others in our group were whispering "it's Harrelson's daughter that he never knew about" - I guess they were looking for a girl with a very distinctive face, but her look definitely set forth some confusion.

Decided I'm seeing this again this week. There's some bits that I really loved that I want to see again.

I didn’t think it was possible but they succeeded at showing a scary Chewbacca all narly with mud.

Chewie is so very much associated with cute and funny due to his mannerisms that it was a breath of fresh air to see a monster who had probably killed and ate other humans in that cell prior to Han saving his own life by barely speaking his language.

:exactly:

I'm surprised that more people aren't talking about this. It was like they rebooted Chewy to that mysterious and somewhat scary thing you meet in the Cantina.

$83.32M 3-Day Weekend (Est.) (North America)

$65.0M Overseas Opening Weekend / 54 Markets
$148.3M Global Opening Weekend

Estimates for North America 4-day weekend now $101M

Yeah, the trades (HR and Variety) are now saying there's a possibility that it won't even reach $100m with the four day total. It was expected to make $130-150m threeday.

Looks like Solo is going to be yolo unfortunately.

3. RO (better villains and third act than Solo)
4. Solo (better heroes and first/second acts than RO)

Pretty much nails the strengths and weaknesses of Solo vs RO. Solo was SOOO screaming for a great villain, and that third act just ground the whole movie to a halt.

It probably didn't help with the family audiences that the writer and actor said that Lando could be pan-sexual... that's probably going to turn off family audiences... and according to the review I read they said only 18% of the audience was families.. I'm not sure when people involved in movies are going to learn that people don't want their family entertainment to deal with sex issues, so implying that a character is a huge pervert is probably not going to help things..

This was a strange and very surprising thing for Disney to allow to get out there. Seems like a misjudgement that surely must have cost some $$ when Solo was always going to need every $ it could get.

That train sequence made me think of that game with Dash Rengar.

Kept waiting to hear the dreaded IG-88 sounds.... but they used the Probots instead.

Even though I liked the movie, the whole thing really felt very much like a Shadows of the Empire TV movie to me. But then it's not a fair assessment - Solo didn't have the massive built-in stakes that RO got to borrow from ANH.

Solo really is "truly" the first standalone SW movie mostly because RO wasn't truly standing alone by owning so much ANH real estate.

Two-Tubes is now in the two-films or more club. As much as Piett and Dooku, almost as much as Tarkin. Then again, so is Maul. :lol

He needs an HT figure made of him.

I am in that category and I know I can't separate the OT from my nostalgia feels and sense-memory reveries. But I am capable of looking at them critically and rating them among themselves and their then-peers.

Being of this age though it is difficult to un-see the influence of the OT on not only current SW but film in general so it's hard to separate that knowledge and experience from comparisons. I appreciate the OT one way, the Prequels another, and the current stuff yet another way.

So I guess I would be surprised to see SW fans in my age group or older rating the new stuff above the OT but not the younger audience. Just within this thread we've seen people say that anyone who isn't a lazy, fat **** can be a US Marine, or that any artist can draw faces. One guy insists Luke put those Gamorrean's into an instant sleep in ROTJ. It's a helluva mixing pot here of age, experience, and...whatever else is going on. :lol Nothing surprises me.
