Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)
Yeah, my buddy and I both turned to each other when she took the mask off. Was also a little unclear if they were trying to confuse the audience about her being Harrelson’s daughter or something, kinda strange casting.
Wow - these were the same in-theater conversations we had. Right after the Maya thing, others in our group were whispering "it's Harrelson's daughter that he never knew about" - I guess they were looking for a girl with a very distinctive face, but her look definitely set forth some confusion.
Decided I'm seeing this again this week. There's some bits that I really loved that I want to see again.
I didn’t think it was possible but they succeeded at showing a scary Chewbacca all narly with mud.
Chewie is so very much associated with cute and funny due to his mannerisms that it was a breath of fresh air to see a monster who had probably killed and ate other humans in that cell prior to Han saving his own life by barely speaking his language.
I'm surprised that more people aren't talking about this. It was like they rebooted Chewy to that mysterious and somewhat scary thing you meet in the Cantina.

Yeah, the trades (HR and Variety) are now saying there's a possibility that it won't even reach $100m with the
four day total. It was expected to make $130-150m threeday.
Looks like Solo is going to be yolo unfortunately.
3. RO (better villains and third act than Solo)
4. Solo (better heroes and first/second acts than RO)
Pretty much nails the strengths and weaknesses of Solo vs RO. Solo was SOOO screaming for a great villain, and that third act just ground the whole movie to a halt.
It probably didn't help with the family audiences that the writer and actor said that Lando could be pan-sexual... that's probably going to turn off family audiences... and according to the review I read they said only 18% of the audience was families.. I'm not sure when people involved in movies are going to learn that people don't want their family entertainment to deal with sex issues, so implying that a character is a huge pervert is probably not going to help things..
This was a strange and very surprising thing for Disney to allow to get out there. Seems like a misjudgement that surely must have cost some $$ when Solo was always going to need every $ it could get.
That train sequence made me think of that game with Dash Rengar.
Kept waiting to hear the dreaded IG-88 sounds.... but they used the Probots instead.
Even though I liked the movie, the whole thing really felt very much like a Shadows of the Empire TV movie to me. But then it's not a fair assessment - Solo didn't have the massive built-in stakes that RO got to borrow from ANH.
Solo really is "truly" the first standalone SW movie mostly because RO wasn't truly standing alone by owning so much ANH real estate.
