Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Could you imagine if the real world were like social media? Would make the wild west look like day care. There'd be fights every 50 feet, carnage in the streets.

Well, not really, most people try to avoid conflicts. They are brave in their basements, but chickens IRL

People would have to carry around pictures of Michael Jackson eating popcorn in case a fight broke out.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

The Halloween trailer got me in the mood for horror lol

A24 is the producing team from The Witch so I figured I give it a shot on this lazy sunday.

I’ll probably catch Solo 1 last time since I have free movie passes I need to use before they expire.

Go team goat. :yess:

Ive heard nothing but great things about hereditary
It is freaking out even the most knowledgeable horror fans.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Just getting around to seeing this. I loved it. I could totally watch another movie with this cast.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

After adjusting the worldwide box office from their insane initial predictions, then lowering them to 400-450mil, then saying it won’t even pass 400... the latest predictions have it set to not even pull in $350 million WW once all is said and done, and possibly finish up at $330 mil or lower.

Meanwhile JW2 made $151mil internationally on its first weekend (hasn’t opened domestically), already beating out Solo’s $136mil total international take.

Insanity all around... truly a flaming wreck

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Yeah, in the context of the JW2 interntional opening and IW crossing $2B worldwide this weekend, it's pretty shocking.

But no, Solo is going to land in the $375m worldwide range. It has around another $30m in domestic to go, and Japan is still yet to open (strength there might see it sneak closer to $400m worldwide.)

It's worth noting that even in the aftermath of the very poor opening weekend, Variety had analysts projecting a $400-450m worldwide result, so the actual final is $50-75m below even what those dire post-opening estimates showed. Solo's negative cost is somewhere in the $400-450m range (Variety quoted $150m promotion budget, production budget is in the $250-300m range but unconfirmed) which even at Disney's 60-65% highway robbery of theater owners would mean the break even for Solo would be in the $650-700m range.

Simply put, Disney spent $450m all up on Solo and will earn back around $220-250m from theatrical, so breakeven will fall to home video and merchandising (Disney gets 10-20% of Solo merchandise sales.)

Even based on TLJ's diminished merch totals (which missed Disney's target) Solo may earn $250m+ from merch alone - though its unclear how strongly a movie that underperforms so drastically is going to move Solo-branded merchandise. It's more than possible Solo merchandise is "bombing" also.

The sobering quote from the Variety story for Disney: “It’s a financial disappointment and you have to wonder, is this just a speed bump in the road for the ‘Star Wars’ brand, or is there something more here?,” said Eric Handler, an analyst at MKM Partners.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

It baffles me that movie fans nowadays seem to be obsessed with the financials of a film, rather than whether they enjoyed it or not. When I was a lad we couldn't give a monkey's how much money a film made. Strange times indeed.

Anyhoo, disliked The Force Awakens, loathed The Last Jedi, liked Rogue One and absolutely loved Solo. Looking forward to picking it up on 3D Blu Ray :)

Probably because in today's age of sequels and remakes, a movie that bombs financially probably means it'll never get to continue its story. Also, a movie's financial success or failure may dictate future moves/plans of the studio. That's why for some of us, if we enjoy a film so much, we'll look into its financials to get a clue if we'll get a sequel or not, or if we hate it so much, we look to its box office receipts to see it burn to the ground.

Yeah, I enjoyed Solo too.

Wrote about liking it two weeks ago. When it came out. When everyone saw it.

But then all those hundreds of articles hit about how staggeringly badly it did, so we started discussing how Solo's performance might impact future SW films. Oh **** - sorry, damn financial obsession.:gah:

Sorry. Blu Ray - yeah, will probably pick up Solo on Blu Ray. Definitely. That is if Blu Ray sales haven't pancaked another 30% like they did from 2017 to 2018, meaning Blu Ray as a format may not be viable in the near future and...

Oh damn - sorry. Obsessed with financials again.:gah:

Typical movie fan nowadays.:lol

Apologies Tali, my comment wasn't specifically aimed at you. More that it's just the way most fans look at films these days. It's like everyone's suddenly turned into movie producers, especially on YouTube. I can understand if you want to see a sequel and the box office will affect the likelihood of that happening. But I can't wrap me head around wanting a film to fail? It seems a bit weird to me, but I am getting on in years :)

Finally - after so many years - a fun, decent SW movie comes out... and bombs. :gah::lol

RO was decent, but I can't say it was fun. Solo had a nice balance - it felt fun in the way the OT was. But, alas... here we are. Counting meager beans and looking at a SW winter of our discontent.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I just want to go back to before Disney Wars of when SW was in control by its creator not this disgusting castrating skank you know when it was happy, fun, loved and celebrated....

Can’t we just go back to

83 ROTJ....errrr no scratch that lots of hate that year.

Ok I got it...

99 TPM....errrr no scratch that lots of hate that year.

Ok I got it...

02 AOTC....errrr no scratch that lots of hate that year.

Ok I got it...

05 ROTS....errrr no scratch that lots of hate that year.

Wow 35 years of hate i’m so happy that SW is a family event that brings people together and now we can add death threats to SW. :yess:
