Glad I got to hear it before you deleted it.

Not generally a fan of "Christian" rock, but that song/video almost made me want to watch The Passion.

I never saw it be cause of the brutality of it, but it was nice to see all the mother son shots.

Some of the songs I listed are more just melancholy songs instead of "songs to die by."

No worries. "songs to die by" is a pretty specific kind of song and I'm not even sure that many know what I mean.

Man, I forgot about that song!

Ænima is such a great album. Even though their music is heavy, a lot of it does give you that melancholy feeling, especially Ænima, I used to listen to it in bed with my headphones on!

Here's Eulogy for those interested.

[Edit #2: O.K. if it wasn't for the foul language this would definitely meet the criteria. So one more Tool song from Ænima:

Good pics. How about this one?

i haven't really listened to much of her stuff, i remember that song Mummer's Dance she sings getting some radio play years and years ago, it was a decent one.I actually like some Hagalaz Runedance songs, not too many though..her vocals are meh for most songs.

Wow, I thought I was the only Lorenna McKennit fan. She has some awesome stuff. Let me see if I can find any others that fit the category.

Edit: Nope.. Mostly just scottish new-age type of music. Beautiful, but doesn't quite fit.

Edit 2: except maybe this one:

:lol I wouldn't call that song Christian rock, it is more gospel. :lol

Christian rock would be more Audio Adrenaline, P.O.D., Switchfoot, Kutlass, or Skillet.

My wife and I were trying to figure out exactly what you were talking about; are they songs that make you want to commit suicide? Nutshell by Alice in Chains is probably the #1 song that does that for me.

I guess I've posted quite a few tonight. Not sure if they all "fit," but they all have definitely given me goosebumps the first time I heard them, and usually they still do.

Crushing melody. Great lyrics. Perfect imagery to go with it.

Definitely fits the category.

:lol I wouldn't call that song Christian rock, it is more gospel. :lol

Christian rock would be more Audio Adrenaline, P.O.D., Switchfoot, Kutlass, or Skillet.

I don't know. Some of those bands are almost Metal. To me, Jars of Clay exemplify "Cristian Rock" and the song in question was definitely in that vein.

Gospel is a kin to R and B, blues, and jazz. Not at all the same genre.

My wife and I were trying to figure out exactly what you were talking about; are they songs that make you want to commit suicide? Nutshell by Alice in Chains is probably the #1 song that does that for me.

Decidedly not!!! I don't think you are the first to have that impression though...

...I'll quote my posts describing what I mean...

Do you know that feeling you get from certain sad songs?

Pleasantly melancholy.

When you listen to them, everything looks sad. Sad in a beautiful way.

Sunshine or rain, the city or the country. All things look sad when you here these songs.

Despair feels comforting when you here these songs.

You don't fear death when you hear these songs.

These are Songs To Die By.

If you know the kind of song I mean then post one.

It's not that I am necessarily in despair while listening to it, it's that the artistic expression of despair can be quite comforting at times. Make sense?

When you listen to these songs it romanticizes sadness and it feels "pleasantly melancholy." If that sets me back to "puberty or so" then so be it. Nothing wrong with being young at heart. These kind of songs and the experience that I am describing are a way to 'stop and smell the roses' at any age.

Does that help at all?

The whole looking out the window and everything looking sad really sums it up for me. Do any songs do that for you?

I'll be driving sometimes and one of these songs will start playing and it's like the whole world goes into slow motion. Whether its trees or buildings going buy, they slow down. And you kind of fell like your melting. I'll often get goose bumps as Mesa mentioned. All your cares fall away, as nothing seems to matter for a moment.

I think it's cool that there has been such a variety of songs in this thread. But If you didn't get a chance to hear the first one I posted, it really shows what I am talking about... even the title of the song makes the point.

Entry #1:

So powerful.

Devastatingly sad, even without lyrics.

(Note: the video is for a different song. I chose this version because the audio is uncut. I recommend closing your eyes or looking out the window while listening.)

The song is called "Leaving Hope."

Does that mean it makes me want to kill myself? No. It romanticizes the notion of giving up. I consider myself a hopeful person, but It takes energy to hold on to hope. When listening to these songs, you are free from that for a few moments.

Perhaps I am making to big a thing out of it, and maybe I am the only one that has this kind of experience. I am quite content to see all the above nonsense be interpreted as "melancholy songs."

Carry on. :)

Throwing this one in as a bonus. Just found it for the first time. It's a very interesting mash up.

Since you posted a plodding ambient black metal song, I'll add one...

And I am going to include it as one of my "official" entries because I have put this song on repeat while driving and it has given my the "songs to die by" feeling... Plus, I failed to make an entry yesterday. [See the next post].

Original version is 14 minutes and 39 seconds long, and has a vocal interlude towards the beginning that has more traditional song structure, but this is the part that puts you into a trance. ;)
