I didn't care at all about Rogue One and love the ST, but I'm actually looking forward to this movie as a fun adventure movie that shows more of SW beyond the main conflict of Jedi and the Empire/Rebellion, First Order/Resistance.

Rogue One was enjoyable apocrypha. It was nice to have it, and it was well-done, but ultimately unnecessary. I think Solo will probably end up being similar. The trailer looked really cool and has definitely whetted my appetite. I just hope it packs more of an emotional punch than Rogue One. It would be nice for some of the characters in these spin-offs to appear in Episode IX. I hope Lando at least has a cameo.

I’d buy this in a second.

What a refreshing look compared to Capri pants Rey and coveralls Rose.im really digging it.

I love Emilia Clark. She looks very glamorous in this film.

Once I got over the fact that Harrison isn’t Han in this movie, I started warming up to the idea of a young Han story and what they could do with it. Now after the trailer and Super Bowl teaser I’m definitely excited for this movie. It looks great so far. Hoping they deliver something good.

Maybe Krennic can have a cameo, thus inspiring HT to finally do a figure of him. I’d also like a quick Boba Fett cameo as well.

I am not really excited for this, guess that is down to already having seen a young Han Solo in Star Wars in '77 and the absolute crushing/soul destroying mess that was The Last Jedi.

Seeing someone else play Han Solo and indeed Lando, will be just weird.

We saw someone else play a younger Obi-Wan and that turned out great. This has got to be about 10 years before ANH, at least.

Totally different perception. You would NEVER make a Godfather film with ANYONE other than Brando playing a 40-60 yr old version of Vito Corleone. When they did make him younger it was a large enough gap that De Niro wasn’t jaring or attempting to BE Brando, he was simply being a younger version of Vito. I’d liken Ewan and Alec to this. In the case of Solo, the viewer is acclimated to a 30 something Ford. Having another actor portraying the same character only 5-10 years older/younger just doesn’t work. No one is that different in appearance or personality in that short span of time. This is exponentially more awkward when the character is iconic. If the red-headed villain from the Twilight movie demands more money for a sequel and the Studio tells them to stuff it and gets someone else, no one gonna care, but in this situation, people most certainly do.

McGregor was much younger and was completely necessary to tell episodes 1-3, plus Guinness had a much smaller role/far less screen time in the OT than Han does in the OT (and now TFA too). Not only is this movie not necessary, the guy almost looks older than Ford was, or at least the same age (also looks/sounds nothing like him). McGregor did a decent enough job with the voice and the age gap was substantial enough that he was convincing enough.

:exactly:

As I stated in another topic, I prefer Disney not base one-off movies on main story characters. Rogue One route is the way to go. This Solo movie would have been about another smuggler where we can witness Han's possession of Falcon as a small side story. Let's say, the smuggler enters a cantina or casino or jail, whatsoever and in a brief scene (30 sec to 3 min) we see Han and Lando gamble on Falcon. Thus, beside introducing new and original characters, we would have twitnessed an important event for main characters.

Yeah I agree there's a big difference between the two, and it'll take a lot more effort on our part to buy anyone else as Han, but for me it still feels like an adjustment I'll be able to make.

And at least to me, Alden does come across as much younger and less mature than Ford in ANH, however close in age the actors might be. And he's also got the right swagger and cocky attitude, which helps a lot too I think.

There are actually several different looks he sports in the movie. There's the white vest black shirt McQuarrie version. There's the brown leather jacket. There's the fur coat. And then there's the big poncho thing with hunter's cap he has when he's talking to the Imperial recruiting officer, plus

the Imperial officer disguise from the Lego toy leak

They may be able to get the 3 main outfits in one figure like they did with Jyn, if it's just a matter of swapping out jackets and vests.
