That's an awesome idea! I wonder how much it would cost?

I don't know. The guy guessimated $75...but who knows. Still, it must be somewhat affordable for HS trophies.

The process is unobtrusive as they do "plate" plastic statues, etc. Not sure if it "softens" the detailing or anything like that.

I'll look into it.

There're a few issues with that process. It'll be near too expensive to do just one, so you may want to get everyone together on the deal. Also, not sure you'll get the deep gold color you're looking for. Most are too light and almost chrome in color. And, not sure you'll get the smooth coat all the way around. All trophies have some point that's uncoated or not coated evenly where the machine dips them.

That's good to know, thanks! Organizing a group rate might be an option, if the company doesn't mind arks coming from all over the country, but I just see that as a headache for whomever becomes the pointman. That plus we only have like what here -- 3-6 arks that people have kept on order. Not really much of an improvement over just one.

The color is an issue, but of course I'll check to see if there's a richer "orangy" gold available, like the color of 3PO.

I have a few places to call here, tried one already but they didn't answer their phone and another place does strictly industrial. Anyway, gotta find out where the trophies get plated.

OK, so I spoke to a guy at a place in Santa Fe Springs and he quoted me a price of around $50. Another guy has a minimum of $100 but said my job sounded to be in that bracket.

I didn't get into the detail (angels, etc) which may up the price in terms of prep work but I just wanted a ballpark figure.

He plates with "metal" that has specs of real gold. I said i didn't really need real gold and he suggested I just got to a paint shop and have them do it for even less.

Anyway, it's a good start at that price -- less than replacing a sculpt. I want to investigate more places -- unfortunately it looks like the actual drive to one of these places is gonna be the worst part. They're all out in hell-and-gone.

I'll also check out these "paint shops" and see what they think about what we're trying to accomplish.

More news to come, stayed tuned...

Ugh.... I think instead of going through all that hassle I'd just buy the Hasbor version and be done with it. :)

Awesome job. Depending on what you do I may decide to go that route. I don't have a problem with the Ark as much as other people seem to do but good luck man.

Seeing it in person, the Ark is too big. Even with proper plating it's not right. :duh

I was second guessing dropping the EX until I saw it at SDCC. Very glad I stuck with Hasbro. But more power to you guys trying to make a silk purse outta this one. :whip

Too big really? From the pictures it looks perfect next to Indy.

Is it really bigger than this?

Isn't this a bit small, it comes up to his knee...

Yeah, I'm not sure it's too big. Sideshow's may be too small for all we know (and based on photos). I think the top of the angels should hit right around his mid-section.

Here's a pic of me next to the Ark from the film. It's the exact same Ark as seen in the photo above of the German carrying it. I'm 5'10" and you can see it's not that tall. I think SS did make it just a bit too big.

Sorry Sideshow. Cancelled

The more I look at screencaps from the film and prop photos, I just can't live with that sprayed on look with the colour, as opposed to the gold reflective shiny look of the original. Also I'd end up insisting on resculpting those wings to make them level.. more elegant... slimmer... better shaped shoulders etc, and to make the feet less thick at the bottom.....and I just don't have the time for that... especially on something like this.

Damn. Was looking forward to this too.

The Idol prop had better be good... that's what will stop me missing the ark on my display shelf next to my custom Indy.

UPDATE: SSC ARE WORKING ON A 1:4 SCALE ARK OF THE COVENANT! They just said so in the presentation video up know. No pictures or anything BUT DOOM BRIDGE DIORAMA IN PROGRESS!
