A couple years ago one of the members here had a marvelous idea. He is a man of incredible talent, kindness and compassion, and great humor. He had an idea that brought the customizing community here together as it never had before in a frenzy of creativity that hasn't been surpassed since. I'm referring of course to our own Les Walker and his deadfest custom challenge where anyone who wanted to participate was more than welcome.

Our once mighty custom community has fractured a bit, and despite having more talent than ever, it appears we have lost that feeling of brotherhood that once surrounded this forum.
Well its September and SSC is gearing up toward Spooktacular once again and although its short notice why don't we try and reignite some of that old fire again? We have about 6 weeks to come up with something Spook related, whether its 'help Wanted' oriented or just plain creepy? A backdrop or dio, a repaint, or a kit bash, a new sculpt or something completely new and unimagined!
I propose that even though Les is quite busy and doesn't have to be directly involved, with his permission, we call this the Annual Les Walker Custom Challenge 2009 Edition just out of shear respect.
Maybe we can coax the legendary Dark Artist to jump into his mix of black gray and blood red, and Mikey to pull something fantastic from the twilight zone, or Barryo to produce some blood stained props, or the gruesome spectacles of Die, and so many other talented folks we have roaming this board.

And Les I hope I haven't offended you and I don't want you (or anyone else) to feel any obligation if you are too busy, but you did a wonderful thing for all of us back then and I would like to think there is enough good will left here to try again.

Re: SSF Golden age of customizing

Great idea! I think creating a new Deadfest would be very cool :rock

Re: SSF Golden age of customizing

Man, those were the days!

I think it would be awesome to have another Halloween-themed figure challenge. We shouldn't limit it to just zombies/dead though, as I've made like hundreds of zombies and I'm wanting to move on to other things now :duh

How about anything creepy, bloody or scary-looking? Just a basic tribute to Halloween & our first figure challenge? It could be a ghost, demon or a bloodied-up killer, etc. Sound good?

I'm working on something new now that I should have finished in time :maul

Anzik, you should start a thread for this and make a list of people who are down for this project like we used to. That way, we'd have an idea of how it can go. The title of this thread may not catch peoples' attention, I almost passed right by!

Re: SSF Golden age of customizing

Agreed... make a Deadfest '09, or whatever thread and lets get people on board. I think keeping it broad (like Die has suggested) is a good idea. Just the caveate that it has to be new work... no resting on laurels :lol

I think we could all use with a bit of group creativity :rock

Re: SSF Golden age of customizing

Awesome idea! While I won't be able to contribute, I'll be watching this thread very closely.

You should get involved as well King! I have a feeling you could make something cool for a challenge :rock

I have absolutely no customizing talent at all, but I can't wait to see what all of the customizers come up with! Great idea

I'm in.

What would the deadline be? We should definitely do it for at least the whole month of October.

You mean have Oct. 29 as the final deadline?

We could start it up this month and have it last until then. Maybe it would motivate people and give others time to try more than one custom?

And I'd suggest maybe having a time frame in which we can post the work... like say the 22nd through the 29th and start an images only thread.

People can post teasers here, but not show the full pieces until the end. And of course comments on the pieces can be posted here as well.

I don't know if I can be a part of this one, but if I can I will.... maybe a quick zombie or something. But glad to see you guys keeping the tradition going! :rock
