l think its stupid celebs who already have millions charge there fans for autographs.if l was a celeb l would do it for free.

Yea I agree. I don't think signings should be used as a way to make money from the people who helped you make money in the first place. I know there are those people who only use his autographs for investment purposes and could probably care less about him but, still. I don't know his reason of charging people so I guess I shouldn't say anything.

So I slept on it, and just now bought 1X for autographs. I guess it is the norm to see lots of celebrities charging for autographs, and there is no bigger legend than Stan Lee when it comes to comics.

So, what should I get him to sign? I don't have any comics that are significant enough in value for him to sign, and they would just sit in a box, so I'd much rather have him sign a statue. and I'm guessing signing the base is the way to go. Which one?

- Hulk PF
- Spiderman PF (I'm hesitant on this as this piece isn't in high demand)
- Doom PF (this may be difficult as it's all one piece and weighs a ton)
- X-Men #1 Dio

Great decision to buy that autograph. $50 isn't bad for someone like Stan Lee. Factor in that you get to meet the legend in person and figure most sports athletes charge $100+ for autographs. Look at someone like Jacoby Ellsbury from the Boston Red Sox. He charged $110for an autograph a couple of years ago at a local mall.

Which one has the most value to you personally? Remember autographs can sometimes lower the value of pieces like these if you ever decide to sell it down the road. Collectors are generally a fickle bunch (although I doubt those PF's will lose any value because of how sought after those pieces are...) Just something to keep in mind.

I think the charging a fee for someone as famous as Stan Lee is sort of necessary to keep EVERYONE from getting in line and preventing serious fans from getting a single autograph. I doubt he needs the money, and doubt he wants to charge a fee, but it's necessary to keep some level of order and cap the amount of people that want an autograph, simply due to time constraints. I'm sort of glad the autograph is a pre-order with a specific time, so hopefully I'll be in line for no more than an hour.

Honestly, I don't see how a signature could devalue the piece at all. Many statues are expected to be inspected/displayed, so I don't think it's like a MOC action figure. And I plan on getting a good photograph of him signing the base, with the edition number showing as he's signing, so how cool would that be to have that pic near your status to show people that Stan Lee held it?

Most of the time, it's the vendors that bring in the celebrities that are responsible for the ridiculous prices of autographs. Vendors want to make a profit and have to predetermine how many people are willing and able to purchase an autograph. Keep in mind some celebs make a living off of doing signings to supplement income. They'll charge a flat rate through their agencies.

Let's say for example, Stan Lee charges a $10,000 flat fee for an appearance. A vendor decides to bring him in for a signing at a convention. By charging, $50 for autograph...the vendor is figuring that it will take 200 people to make sure that he breaks even for the appearance fee alone. The vendors aren't in the business to lose money. They want to make as much profit as they can.

Stan is like a thousand years old and will be dead soon. I'm not being mean. If you pass this opportunity up you may kick yourself later on down the line if it's the only chance you had.

i wish that was the asking price here in sdcc.

i would pay that price just to meet him and a pic with him.

:lecture

If it wernt for the weight and size, i would say Doom PF. But Hulk PF would be my second option.

If you can get the signature in person then yes. What good is it if you dont get to meet him?

Well, that must be his only income, don't be too hard on him

Yeah, I'm sure he didn't get a fat paycheck from Batman: Arkham Asylum or the upcoming sequel. ;)

As for Lee, if the dude means that much to you, $50 isn't that bad considering there're a bunch of E-list celebs (Star Trek redshirts, Voorhees/Myers victims, etc.) charging $20 for theirs who haven't reached even close to the success (recognition) he has.

Mesa,

I think you definitely made a good move by opting for the autograph ticket! Congrats!

As for what to get signed, I honestly wouldn't get a base signed. If anything, I would either get a photo of him autographed or a nice quality reprint of a comic book cover that I'm sure will be available at the booth. That's my opinion, but do what ultimately makes you the happiest.

I don't think Stan needs the money. Like the other guy said it's more to keep some sense of order, otherwise if it's free can you imagine the how long the queue would be? I think this kind of opportunity doesn't come very often so it it was me I'd grab it. And give the guy a break, he's in his eighties and he is still out there signing autographs, meeting fans...how many celebs in his eighties are out there doing that?

I met Stan Lee at SDCC a few years ago. My Dad and Brother and things they wanted signed, but I didn't. So I just got one of theirs signed. All three things they had signed got Stan's attention. My Dad's was a big oversized comic from his childhood. Stan Lee is on the index page with a dark beard instead of his iconic mustache. I think Stan was just thrilled to see something out of the norm. It wasn't a critical or popular issue I think, but it was just something my Dad has always cherrished so that meant more to him than what issue it was.

My brother's were some of the origins of the heroes books. Spider-man, Hulk, X-men, Daredevil, etc all the major heroes are in them. Again, Stan was surprised by them. He even asked my brother where he got them, but he didn't know as he got them as a gift for a birthday or Christmas or something. But Stan was showing these off to the guy sitting next to him, talking about it, holding up the line, etc :lol

It was a great experience. It was free, but we did stand in line for an hour or two after going through the hassle of getting a ticket at a booth. But I would say $50 isn't that bad, and worth it. As many have said, Stan Lee isn't getting any younger and even if he doesn't die for another 20 years doesn't mean he will be signing things until then. He may just stop when he is 90 because he is freaking 90! So I say if you have the chance to meet the Legend, do it. And have him something signed that will mean something to you, not just because it will increase the vaule of a PF. I mean, I'm not even sure he would know why you're having him sign a piece of rubble to begin with. I'm sure he has signed a few of them before, but it still would be a strange thing when others are bringing him comics :lol

I'd pay $50 to have 2 or 3 items signed, but not just 1. Getting 1 item signed isn't even worth waiting in the 2 hour line, let alone paying $50. F that!

I don't understand the interest in possessing someone's signature, but if it floats your boat, go for it. If you are thinking about it as an investment in your statue, that's fine, too.

I think it is more or less just proof you've met them and they've held something that belongs to you. It really is kind of a dumb thing, but we as humans do stupider things. I mean who would want a $150 doll or $500 thing made out of stone? :lol

For me, it's more or less about the memories "tied" to the autograph. I've met quite a few celebrities and I always try to get their autograph when I can. Now, I'm in the process of displaying them and it amazes me how I can look at something like an autograph and remember so much about the moment when it was created. They're worth every penny in my opinion.
