I will admit to being biased when it comes to many things Star Trek, particularly Next Generation, which I love. I'll probably never be able to look at Picard's first two seasons in a clear-eyed way because it was so off and different from what Next Generation was supposed to be, in my eyes. If it were just some random sci-fi show and Picard, the Federation, etc. were swapped out with new characters and organizations I might have felt it was fine.I didn't hate the first two seasons as much as most people here, as I thought they did have some interesting ideas sprinkled throughout, but I would agree the tone felt very off and it seemed to be trying way too hard to be "dark and edgy". And the depiction of Starfleet and the Federation in general always kind of rubbed me the wrong way.
So it was really nice to see Matalas do some course correcting with S3 and bring back the more optimistic spirit and a Starfleet that you could actually imagine people wanting to join and be a part of.
