The official attendance number for CV was released: 28,000+

That's about 5,000 - 7,000 lower than I would have guessed, but Lucasfilm seems quite pleased. Hoping CVI is in Orlando again, but they should have it in April or May instead of August. Not only would that make the weather much more palatable... it would separate it further from SDCC & Dragon*Con, which I think really hampered attendance for some.

I thought they were touting 36,000 before the show even started? How did the number go down?

36,000 was the attendance of CIV. Steve told me at SDCC that they expected about 30,000 for CV, because the lead-time was less than half they've had for any of the others and because it was so close to SDCC and Dragon*Con. The 28,000 number was announced yesterday.

What's interesting, however, is despite the 8,000 people difference in attendance CV is almost unanimously considered a bigger success than CIV was for Lucasfilm, both in the management of the con and financially.

28,000 was a great number for me. Not once did I ever feel it was overcrowded or hard to get around.

If anynone has an extra CV Sideshow gift card that they don't need please let me know. I need one for my collection. A guy from work went but couldn't find one for me. I'll even pay for the stamp to send it to me. :)

I would say that weather, SDCC , Dragon Con may be factors but I would say the biggest factor is was not within driving distance for one of the most populated areas in the US.

It was within driving distance (or short, cheap flight) of the most populated area of the country: the Eastern seaboard.

Location is always an issue and big consideration, of course... but I don't think it was that much of a factor at all. Lots of West coast folks made the trek, just as many East coasters were at CIV. The short 7 month lead-time was the biggest impediment, followed by being sandwiched 3 weeks by both SDCC and Dragon*Con.

The weather wasn't really a factor at all... it just made it uncomfortable when outdoors. Having it there in April or May would be much better. Probably cheaper for them too because they wouldn't need to have that massive convention center cooled nearly as much.

I agree... they need to stick to like May. May is perfect. I don't know why they would do August to begin with.

I agree. I think this one was great over all. The OCCC was a great venue.

I think it could have used some more star power but that is it. That and more support from vendors such as Sideshow.

But I think they had great stuff going on all the time.

I would be up for that. :rock
:hi5:

I think the reason it was in August is because they had such a late start this time after securing the location.

And, yes, Sideshow must be at the next one. Like I said in another thread, their absence at CV was palpable.

Ok driving distance with no need for hotel. In LA there were over 20mil people within daily driving distance.

I still don't think that affected CV nearly as much as you think. Especially since Orlando has no shortage of cheap hotels.

Besides, Lucasfilm's numbers also show that 80+% of people who attend the Celebrations come from out-of-state or out of the country anyway. It's kind of like a SW nerd pilgrimage. :lol

I'm sure I'll be up for CVI wherever it is, but if it's at OCCC again, I will be first in line. That place was awesome and the fact that you had inexpensive hotels that were about a 2-3 minute walk was even better. :yess:

Yep. Just give people a year or so advance notice and don't schedule it in between the two biggest conventions in the country and more people are bound to make the trek.

Also, what's amazing is that the most convenient, posh and expensive hotel for CV (the Peabody) was only $139/night. Man, I wish SDCC were like that. :lol

I had been wondering what the rate for the Peabody was, because it would be really awesome to move across that enclosed walkway in comfort. Especially if in costume...

I'm one who gave up SDCC this year in favor of CV. But I guess the truth is I really didn't have a solid plan to go to SDCC anyway. I think with so many years at SDCC behind me, I'm willing to finally start going for just a couple of days. But I feel the opposite about Celebration. There is so much going on and I'm so new to the scene, plus they only seem to come around every three years.

Glad to see the thread resurrected, after a quiet weekend. :D

The Peabody was amazing. I highly recommend it if CVI is there again.

We only used the covered walkway once (when there was a downpour) because you literally walk straight out of the hotel lobby and directly across the street to the OCCC main entrance... and there were Sheriff's deputies stopping traffic both ways so that you could cross the street without even having to wait for the light to change.

Yeah. We were coming and going between the con and our hotel room constantly and it took no time at all. Usually, that kind of thing is a logistical headache.
