Look - I'm a SW die hard, I'm proud to admit it. :lol

Honestly though, SW continuity over the years between the films & various associated media, just reminds me of that famous old Abbot & Costello skit 'Who's On First'.

Plenty of facepalms to go round for everyone. :lol

Yet still we are told that Uncle George had every minutae planned out back in the late 70's.

He didn't even know his main hero and his squeeze were brother and sister when he made the first one.

This has always been a huge exercise in post rationalisation, so nothing has changed really.

:lol

Anyone who's read Splinter of the Mind's Eye knows the brother/sister thing was from left field. Splinter was written as a possible sequel to be filmed in case Harrison wouldn't return for a second film. In the book there is the beginning of a potential Luke and Leia love story.

My guess - Lucas wanted to resolve what had been a love triangle without turning Leia into a b*tch. By making her Luke sister there's no choice to be made.

What's still hilarious (and cringey) is that kiss in Empire. Luke is obviously turned on by the full mouthy that he gets from Leia on Hoth.
Surprised Lucas got away with it so easily.
:lol

I read that happened when they didn't want to cast a new part, the sister, for ROTJ. So likely the idea occurred to Lucas during the writing of ROTJ.

According to Kurtz Jedi isn't the real third film. That one was scrapped. The ending was supposed to have the three going their separate ways, possibly with Han dying a heroic death. There was no second Death Star either.

Kurtz and Lucas fell out over Empire and budget/creative problems. With Kurtz out and George wanting to sell more toys a new script was written. I would bet this is the point where she became his sister.

The Luke and Leia kiss never really disturbed me. Maybe the same reason the ewoks never really bothered me, I was a child, I grew up with them.

I doubt he even had decided at that time to make them siblings

Nah, he definitely didn't. He only decided before Jedi to make them siblings. As Nam says there were always twins, just not the main love interest for our hero. I would love to have been there at one of the Jedi script meetings when Lucas announced that the kiss and their relationship in the previous two movies was incestuous.

There is some great stuff in the new Making of book, haven't come across anything that refers to that yet, the conversation between Lucas, Marquand and Kasdan is gold though! Especially the part about Billy Dee Williams expecting to be the star of Jedi.
:lol

Too right mate. Incest and midgets covered in fake fur made me the man I am today.

There is a great part of that conversation with Kasdan and Marquand trying to convince Lucas to kill one of the characters. He point blank refuses, says he hates those type of movies.

Billy Dee settled for wearing a cape.

The closest I ever heard to the twins thing existing before Jedi was how Luke and Leia grew out of an early female character concept "Starkiller Kid". This character is even depicted in a McQuarrie painting.
