Just add it to the list of reasons why Lucas wasn't as great as people think he is/was.

Star Wars was great because of a large team of people that contributed to what that first movie ended up being. It wasn't just one person.

SW was never, ever ment for adults.

Not once.
Incorrect. Read the tag line dated 1977. Star Wars was originally for all ages, not just children.

Gimme a break......oh wait fully grown adult males still buying SW Dollies.....my bad.
It my point is, the boomers who took us to those films in the theaters, did not latch onto SW the way we did. Not as a huge group. Some did, but overall your average SW fan is Gen X or later.

I think you are conflating "average SW fan" (kids and adults from the very beginning) with "obsessive diehard fan" (us who yes, had these films imprint on our DNA since childhood.) All of our parents enjoyed SW when it came out because it *did* cater to them as well as us, the difference is that grownups who saw the OT when it came out, reacted to it the way we would later react to say Top Gun or maybe Pirates of the Caribbean. Films that are fun and exciting and even funny in parts that you thoroughly enjoy from beginning to end but aren't life changing.

That's how most adults responded to the OT. It simply wouldn't have made the numbers that it did if it catered to children and no one else.
