Just add it to the list of reasons why Lucas wasn't as great as people think he is/was.

Star Wars was great because of a large team of people that contributed to what that first movie ended up being. It wasn't just one person.

SW was never, ever ment for adults.

Not once.
Incorrect. Read the tag line dated 1977. Star Wars was originally for all ages, not just children.

Gimme a break......oh wait fully grown adult males still buying SW Dollies.....my bad.
It my point is, the boomers who took us to those films in the theaters, did not latch onto SW the way we did. Not as a huge group. Some did, but overall your average SW fan is Gen X or later.

I think you are conflating "average SW fan" (kids and adults from the very beginning) with "obsessive diehard fan" (us who yes, had these films imprint on our DNA since childhood.) All of our parents enjoyed SW when it came out because it *did* cater to them as well as us, the difference is that grownups who saw the OT when it came out, reacted to it the way we would later react to say Top Gun or maybe Pirates of the Caribbean. Films that are fun and exciting and even funny in parts that you thoroughly enjoy from beginning to end but aren't life changing.

That's how most adults responded to the OT. It simply wouldn't have made the numbers that it did if it catered to children and no one else.

You said it better than I did. But when it comes to a lasting impression , kids were the target.....and the main target.

The merchandising clearly was directed in a large number to kids. I mean we had SW tshirts for adults , and a disco song they shook their booties too, but most of it was toys, bubble bath (remember that stuff?) , lunch boxes (I am sure some adult brought on to work) and sheets and blankets....

If we really wanna be honest with ourselves , they brainwashed us into hard core consumerism at a very young age through these films....and it really really stuck with us.

Most of people my parents age can barely remember the names of the droids....my mom always says RDD2.

The point was , those kids grew up, kept collecting but their adult tastes kicked in, and the new SW just does not have the adult content we want. Because it's mainly geared to kids, as was the OT.

Do you know any boomers that are huge SW fans? If you do they are the rare exceptions, New SW is kid centric , as was the OT. It was never ment to last with that age group. The PT was (and still is) an abomination to me because I was an adult when I saw it. So it really has not lasting impact on me besides more SW content. Same as the DSW universe , more content , much of it is not lasting to me. Entertaining , but it can never capture us the way OT did when we were kids.

Star Wars was always rated PG when it first opened in 1977. It never went full G. Never go full G.

Only Disney movies of the time were still rated G. When I was a kid, I knew "G" meant terrible. It meant "Apple Dumpling Gang" bad.
So the ventilation shaft port wasn’t the Death Star’s G-spot? So confused….

Obviously, the Emperor in ROTJ is super cool, and while I did enjoy Lucas introducing the wicked witch of the west in ROTJ you have to admit that the emperor from ROTJ is more children scaring cackling than the serious tone dark side politician from ESB.

PG in the 80s was being 8 years old watching Perseus’ hawt mom’s naked bumb walking down the beach. :naughty
I remember more than a bumb (what nudity was shown varied globally and how you saw it) but yeah I have that exact memory. :lol

There were some movies/TV of that era that I liked a few aspects of almost as much as SW and Clash of the Titans is one of those (BSG'78 being another.)

Oh man my childhood in the 70’s and early 80’s was filled with searching out nude girls from european cinema.

The tonal shift from ANH/ESB to ROTJ sticks out like a sore thumb.

What are going to do what is done is done.

At least I still own my original program book my brother bought me at the theater in 1983.
Similar tonal shift that occurred with Indy.

Changes culturally and movie-wise from late 1970s to late 1980s, also what was going on personally for Spielberg/Lucas (divorces, kids, ageing, etc.)

When I trained to be a lifeguard at 15 the older dudes showed us Debbie Does Dallas.

Being kidnapped and probed by aliens would have been less eye-opening.
