It's when certain fans want characters to get together, so they create fan art, videos, among other things depicting those characters in a relationship.

Pay attention, my children: "Shipping" comes from "ship", which comes from "relationship". And it's just the relationships that the fans of a certain something are rooting for to happen, regardless if they have been teased by the show/movie itself or not.

Why bother bringing it up in the film? I mean if the character doesn't have a love interest, don't bring it up for the sake of seeming inclusive, let people interpret that aspect for themselves, by spelling it out, you sort of prevent people from identifying with characters in their own way.

Yeah it's silly on both sides. But what amuses me is the idea of grown men who would throw out their previously-awesome dollies of incestuous, bath-robe wearing space wizards because they turn out to be gay. I guess you gotta draw the line somewhere.

Ugh, I remember I once did a search for "Fullmetal Alchemist" online, it was years ago, before I'd ever heard of this type of fan art. It was very confusing as I had no memory of the characters "doing" those "things"

A million years ago someone on this board was mad because Sideshow's Qui-Gon doll didn't have silk robes. He was adamant that the real costume was silk. I did a search for "Qui Gon silk robes." Saw some stuff.
