Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (12/18/15) Discussion Thread

Making the easy criticisms seems to be far more common among the "fanboys" than giving an honest account of how I have viewed these since being 9 years old. People get jaded as they get older and adopt and internalize the opinions of others as if they were their own from the beginning. I don't know if thats the case with you, but it's something I sure seem to see a lot of among my age group.

I know he wanted to be done with it, something I learned after the fact. It doesn't effect how I view his performance in the movie though. I view his performance the same way I always did - it's fine. That's Han Solo, no less than in the previous two films.

Only in later years did I notice that people hated the ewoks but that didn't suddenly make me hate them. I don't really mind them.

I need not say more.

Love the helmet.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (12/18/15) Discussion Thread

As a 12 year old seeing ROTJ, I resented the Ewoks as I thought they were childish. I also hated the musical number in Jabba's palace as well as the one at the end of the movie.

However, Solo was always my favorite character, and I loved his "antics" in the movie. As an adult looking back, yeah I feel like Ford was phoning it in, he probably did because he wasnt really given much that was interesting to do compared to the other two movies. I know, everyone will say he led the Endor raid, but to me his part seemed very under written and lacked any of the meat the two prior episodes had. No real character development, especially for a guy who was put through hell (Carbon freezing) and finally had the weight of Jabba's bounty lifted from his shoulders, and got the girl. I feel like he would have more to do than just smirk all the time.

I even accepted the whole Ewoks beating stormies thing, mostly because the action scenes were so much fun to my 12 year old brain. Who can honestly say they didnt laugh out loud everytime the ewoks took down a Scout Walker?

On a side note i'm going to be broke as hell when HT starts pumping this shyyt out. (Assuming the movie is good which i believe it will be)

That's one hell of a sexy ST helmet, and im sure the rest of the uniform will follow suit. And can you imagine a Chewy with his new bad-ass weapon KS talked about? And countless other shyyt.

Master Luke! (god i hope he's still in some type of black!)

I must say that's pretty cool. But I am a little disappointed that they didn't go with the McQuarrie sketches like everything else has been (X-Wing, some of the set pieces in Tatooine). It would have been great to see his original vision finally on the big screen. And I think it would have been a nice aesthetic for the movie to have a futuristic but at the same time slightly retro look to it, which I think suits the SW universe.

The new ones are indeed cool, but maybe a little too obvious in the direction? Definitely seeing a Tron Legacy look to it.

Let's keep the Ewok talk in perspective folks...

As far as Han's performance in ROTJ goes, I do remember being a little annoyed at how he acted. I think at age 10 I just went with it because, like you guys said, it was still Han. But it did start to wear on me soon after, watching it in later years. HF really played it for laughs. He went full comedian on it, and I can blame the director for that. It would have been his job to reign him back and tell him he was being too broad. Or I could blame the director if perhaps he wanted HF to play Han more broadly. Or we can ultimately blame Lucas because he was in charge and could have intervened.

The biggest problem with HF's performance and also the way Han was written was that we as the audience had just seen him in ESB. In ESB Han was truly the hero--self sacrificing, protective, assertive, clever, capable, dashing and charming. He was the perfect leading man. The audience was eager to see where the character would go from there. We would have been happy if he just maintained the same level of heroism. Instead he took like 20 steps back and became the goofy, wise-cracking sidekick! Why regress him to that extent? That was absolutely not worthy of the character he created in ESB.

The ewoks however definitely did annoy me. They had their moments, but overall it was way too cutesy for me.

I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum. It's obvious they're throwing in everything of his in the Rebels/New Trilogy as they can,and I love McQ just as much as you guys but I really don't need to see every one of his sketches picked up off the floor just to shove down our throats. I want a nice mix and I'm glad we finally got something "new".
