I took Rey's abilities as a balancing "echo" of Light Side powers that manifested in her as a result of Kylo's accelerated rise in the Dark Arts. Normally such abilities would project through the most receptive trained candidate but since Luke stopped spreading his knowledge and went "off the Force grid" nature had to "find a way" as Ian Malcolm would say and went with Rey. As for why it picked her that's where I think her own demeanor and temperament probably played a huge part which allows her to earn her rise even in the absence of training.

Also SOMEONE had to be the first Jedi however many thousands of years ago and that person would have had no mentor so I can easily assume that something similar is happening with Rey. Snoke's explanation to Kylo is good enough for me.
This would be a fine enough theory, the problem is that these films have no exposition in them so all of this important character and world building stuff just didn't exist. We don't even know the basics of the first order and resistance.

Plus while you are right that there had to be a first Jedi, that first Jedi had to have studied and meditated over decades to gain that power. Rey just has them one day.

My friend was complaining about the first order today and where it all came form..

The world building in these films should be easy since its SW.. But it's non existent in these two fims.

Actually no according to TFA and TLJ. ;)

Hence why everyone is pissed; because yes according to every single other movie.

These films are all Chekov's gun but without the setup. Basic film theory. Set something up with the characters and have it pay off later. The first half of this is entirely missing. Characters just kind of do things without us knowing why and we are supposed to cheer because we know by context it is heroic.

This thread is filled with Russian Trolls! :lol

Can't believe I actually saw some comparing this to AOTC. :rotfl

I was reading a few articles on my phone that said a vast majority of the negative ratings for this film were given by first time users, interpret that however you want, but ratings aggregators like Cinemascore, which only accepts ratings from people who have actually been verified to have seen the film, have given TLJ a rating of A.

Is the movie perfect? No

I honestly enjoyed it greatly despite a few issues, like Super Leia and hand puppet Yoda.

I think many of you just can't accept when a film takes turns you didn't want . I know so many of you Pre-visualized Jedi Master Luke's epic lightsaber battle over and over in your head. Sorry you didn't get what you wanted. Personally, I like it when a movie doesn't necessarily do the expected.

I went into this movie with a blank slate and came out quite happy.

I actually do compare this to AOTC which is the weakest Star Wars Film in my opinion.

The truth is we don't know enough about the origin of the Jedi and the force, as far as the movie canon goes, but all the speculating and fan theories are just that because of the lazy writing.

What isn't a theory or speculation is what's been established in the OT and the PT. If a new movie series changes things or goes against what's been established, at least it should give concrete answers, but they can't, because these movie are making things up as they go. So maybe in the next film we find out that Rey is related to Thor.

The FO was the remnants of the Empire that retreated to the Outer Rims after the Emperor's death.

This was actually explained in BF2. In the event of the Emperor's death, the Empire is supposed to enact a scorched earth policy in all their territories before retreating to rebuild.

.

I would say that the RT user score seems to be in line with this thread at least :lol

I think people will always dispute were something does not line up with their way of thinking.. If TLJ has a bad user rating on RT does it not stand to reason that many of these same trolls would have crapped on TFA which has a good user rating.

This new trilogy seems so pointless, Return was a perfect ending to the story. This new film is all about subverting expectations and taking the story in a new direction, but does this story even need to be told?

TLJ was an entertaining enough way to spend a Saturday night but...

:exactly::exactly::exactly:

In Hamill's own words: "I thought 'look, why mess with the success?' We're never going to catch lightning in a bottle again. We had a beginning, middle and end - let's let the memories suffice."

He obviously didn't understand the way billion dollar intellectual property franchises work.:lol

Well I should not have to go to a video game of all things to get the answers.. But that sounds good to me..

LOL Video game writers care more then the film makers.

A couple extra lines in TFA's opening scroll about the origin of the FO would have gone a long way.

I saw all the PT on opening nights and seen them all repeat viewing with sold out crowds.. Nobody ever laughed at the movie... I would say it was more like an uncomfortable silence :lol

I wont go that far... It might be second worst.

I am telling you jye watch the the "everything great about" reviews on youtube... It gives you a different perspective on the films and you may find some things to like about them.. Having said that.. They are still trash :lol

Uncomfortable silence :lol

I prefer the now famous RLM review of the PT.

Where was any of this in the movie? The thing that matters.:dunno

It was literally stated in the opening crawl of TFA.

Luke Skywalker has vanished.
In his absence, the sinister
FIRST ORDER has risen
from the ashes of the Empire
and will not rest until Skywalker, the last Jedi,
has been destroyed.

With the support of the REPUBLIC,
General Leia Organa leads a brave RESISTANCE.
She is desperate to find her
brother Luke and gain his
help in restoring peace and
justice to the galaxy.

Leia has sent her most daring
pilot on a secret mission
to Jakku, where an old ally
has discovered a clue to
Luke’s whereabouts . . . .

BF2 elaborated on it but TFA did allude to the origins of FO

After thinking about this for a day.... I actually don't mind that there was not too much info on Snoke. Initial disappointment? Yes, but it makes sense after the dust has settled.

It kind of ties up with Rey not coming from a special lineage. Rian was trying to re-enforce that anyone can have the Force. Not everything needs to linked up to someone from the previous movies. The Universe is vast and miracles pop up every day.

Rey just happens to be a Force prodigy, just like Anakin was back 100 years from the current timeline. In turn, why can't Snoke be a dark side Force prodigy as well equal to Anakin. Maybe he was a late bloomer that didn't get a chance to learn the Dark side during the prequel era. Given the Sith Membership club was pretty cut off.... 1 Sith Lord to 1 apprentice, Vader blocked any new Sith applications.

Snoke could have also searched a Sith temple and grabbed ancient texts. He didn't have to be trained by Palpetine. Just my 2 cents. Palpatine might have learned the ways of the Sith the very same way.

Only thing I hated about TLJ was the whole Finn / Rose story arc. That Casino scene was a waste of time, and was totally "give them something to do" territory.

I think its a 7 or 8 out of 10

The time to explain that was when the TFA begins, not two years later in a video game.

RLM is brilliant with their reviews.. However they did not like RO so I lost some respect :lol

I really started down the Dark Path after watching the RLM reviews of the PT.. But after watching "everything great" I realized it was not all bad.

I am easily swayed :lol
