I actually liked the DJ - war is a business storyline in the movie. But i don't think they handled Canto/Casino right to make it powerful. It was wasted IMO. I liked his performance though.

The Porgs actually worked in this movie. They were ****ing hilarious at times and helped distract from the absurd plot playing out.

Its depressing when a ridiculous comedic Pug-bird creature made to sell toys actually works better on film than legendary characters like Luke Skywalker, Leia & Yoda.

That's Johnson's legacy. Nailed the Porgs, wrecked everything else.

the rose girl is not even ugly in real life.... disney and Kathleen somehow MADE her look weird and gave her ugly clothes and made her annoying.
if anything you and more people (specially the asian fanbase) should be angry at how they hid this girl under a hideous haircut, no make up and baggy clothes giving her no curves
they really went out of her way to make her homely. yet no one seems to have a problem with this

she could have easily been a star wars cutie like rey but they almost went out of their way to make her as unappealing as possible. shes very cute in real life, she has nice curves, great hair

I think your problem is that you don't realize her looks have absolutely nothing to do with her character. Why do you care so much about how attractive she is made to look?

There are plenty of women that could care less about dressing up to appeal to you.

Pretty character appropriate since (I think) she was an Engineer.

I was very skeptical of the Porgs, turned out they were an innocuous inclusion in the film.

Can't say the same about Ewoks or Gungans.

Porgs were scene stealers. And actually one of the positive elements. As comedy they worked, unlike the misplaced comedic moments such as Luke throwing the sabre.

BR 2049 was the ****. Too bad Denis Villeneuve wasn't picked for Episode 8. Though his directing style seems more suited to Blade Runner than SW.

Johnson is a genius and I freaking love this movie. This is exactly the type of conversation I hoped we'd be having one day immediately after those first few images of Rose and the Porgs started surfacing.

Many of you are going out of your way to tell Kathleen Kennedy in plain English that you will accept nothing but a carbon copy of ROTJ from Episode IX now. So expect another fat crimelord, Starkiller Base 2.0, Rey tossing her lightsaber, etc.

Khev has already tried to exhaustively explain why Rey has so much potential in the Force. The movie also explained that and I already explained why Kylo wasn't trying to beat Rey in TFA in the first place. Khev also added to that.

How about this? Explain how the **** Luke was able to start blocking blaster bolt within hours of starting his Force training? Does that look like he spent a decade of his life getting there? Don't even get me started on how he was able to even pilot an X-wing into battle without any actual combat training either.

Luke was also able to force grab his lightsaber in ESB despite Obi Wan not being around to teach him. Why don't you complain about that?

And that is the entire problem. Rey has potential. Potential is great. But what trhe film makes the cardinal mistake of doing is not explain how she bridged the gap between potential and realizing it.

Luke was able to master the blaster bolt training orb because we saw Obi Wan set up the exercise and tell him how to do it. Luke was able to grab the saber (with great difficulty I have to add) because he was aware that was a Jedi power. He knew how to fly an X-wing and hit the reactor because it had been established through dialouge that he was a competent pilot and the shot wasn't even all that hard for him given his past experience. But even after weeks of training with Yoda he was still impressed at Yoda's ability to move the X-wing.

These films have none of that. Rey and Broom Boy are able to just use the Force out of nowhere. Not a second of training. No set up. No indication that they even know what the force is or what it is capable of. They just have force potential, so they are suddenly able to use it.

These examples from the OT that I spoke of may seem like tiny moments. And they are. But tiny setups that only take one or two seconds of dialoiuge or screen time make a massive world of difference in having the character's actions and development make sense. We don't always need to see every bit of it, but we do need to know that it happened.

It's just basic film theory. Set up and payoff. This is just all payoff with nothing that justifies earning it. There's no arc since we don't get to witness any growth.
