There's personal attacks on both sides, it's the internet. I've seen people who hated the movie call people who liked it "****ing morons" and to "never speak to me again". As well as tons of personal attacks on rian, daisy, adam, mark, etc. Keyboard warriors everywhere.

Well, to be fair, he's probably right. The discussion on this forum is only a tiny sample, where things stay relatively civilized.
I'm sure people must be going crazy on twitter, reddit, etc... I don't use those sites but it's probably really bad on both sides :lol

Here we just make fun of Rian Johnson (mostly), and he doesn't read it anyway. It's not like personal attacks on twitter where people tag him.

I actually agree on alot of this. Rey is super powerful too quick, there were completely unnecessary characters (holdo, rose, dj), the whole broom kid thing was dumb, casino planet sucked, Leia's superman scene was a real wtf moment, and plot holes.

I guess I'm just saying to me it's not half as bad as so many are making it out to be. There was alot to enjoy in this movie, at least I thought. I had this same discussion with people many times over Batman v Superman when it was getting hated on. Flawed but alot to love as well. I grew up with the prequels (ROTS is one of my favorites) so maybe I'm more forgiving than others. I understand all of your criticisms and agree with alot of them but the nonstop hate gets old.

Hey man, it’s always good to have your own opinion! I’m glad that you did enjoy it. I grew up with the Ot and not the prequels, but I do like them a lot too and can forgive a lot of their flaws. Honestly if the dialog had been worked on a bit and there was another director to maybe direct the acting... I think they’re wonderful imaginative movies.

People say Lucas was a bad director, but outside of directing actors I think he was an amazing director. Those movies are a visual tour de force, and the music is Williams best ever as well. The OT has its own strengths. Unfortunately (or perhaps it *is* fortunate?) I cant jive with the sequels here.

I also get you on the hate. I liked BvS quite a lot, I didn’t feel the hate was justified, but I also had fun with people taking a dump on it. It clearly wasn’t for everyone. But it was a stand-alone movie in a different universe. Batman can be and will be rebooted again at some point so it doesn’t ‘ruin’ his character. Same for Supes. So I could enjoy this take on then. However Luke’s character has been taken really far off from who he is in adore the continuation that’s canon. So that’s why it doesn’t jive with me personally.

Also I think ROTS is my2nd fave so I get you on that, it’s one of the few movies where I think not a single frame is wasted and it packed to the brim with goings ons. In fact it should have been longer. You can tell the most thought was put into that one, and I think Lucas himself said 2/3 of the material he had for the PT was all in RoTS, and it shows.

Haha honestly I think other than disagreeing on TLJ we seem to agree on quite a bit, so cheers! :duff

The post quoted is perfect example of the personal attacks that many of the film's supporters resort to in order to avoid discussing the actual criticisms.

Yeah he seems to appear out of the woodwork from time to time to spread some salt or randomly attack a particular person

I must say they really do know how market a movie in both these cases the force awakens and TLJ I did not get a hint of what they were planing unfortunately I was disappointed the first was a copy of a previous movie that became all to predictable and this ridculas
Sequel.

It's becoming clear they really have idea were they intend to go with the story how else can there be such a disconnect between both movies they build it up in the first and throw it away in the second. Fill in the movie with a silly side.plot and a cameo.

Should not the movie advance the plot rather then simply fill in the gap. The entire movie is non consequential, it's the equivalent of filler episode i have only seen this done twice before in movies ths divergent series and the last Harry potter created just to milk a franchise. What a farce

I love ROTS as well. Like it's been mentioned before in this thread, for many, the prequels at least have the merit of feeling like Star Wars. Sure, they are flawed movies through and through, but in the case of Star Wars movies, not being pulled out of the universe matters just as much as 'regular movie' quality. That's where a lot of fans feel let down by TLJ. It's just not really Star Wars to them.

If you feel like the action is lacking in TLJ (understandably):

It's really not like directors/Lucasfilm don't have incredible material to pull from for inspiration. So lazy.
Some of these trailers have better acting than the movies btw :lol

How about Leia giving up on her own son :panic:

At that point he had murdered so many people (directly or indirectly, like in the first scene from TFA), killed his own father, and was part of an organization that had just blown up several planets in front of his eyes... I'd give up on my child as well. Kid is worse than the worst serial killer.

Luke thinking about killing him in his sleep when he had yet to turn to the dark side, that's different.

That is where I thought Johnson took it too far with Luke acting like a serial killer..how in the world did Mark agree to that scene

Damn right, it’s definitely Star Wars through and through, just focused on a different part of the world, and I love that about it. More tech and clean and populated than grungy and falling apart places. I almost feel like Lucas would have gone with a more nature / getting back to basics theme with the ST with that progression, and judging by the way these mythological things play out. But we’ll never know now.

Haha... he’s *literally* worse than Hitler... :lol

I don’t know how they can sell him coming back. Even Vader is an angel in comparison.

Also I gotta say I know a lot of ppl like Kylo and think he’s a better done Anakin... but I don’t agree. His acting is better, and that is all.

However his character is paper thin... what do we know about him? That he’s ‘conflicted.’

*Why?*

We know he thought daddy was a let down. We know he was seduced to the dark side.. somehow... what else do we know? Just that he throws tantrums and is conflicted and wants Rey to join him. (At least Vader had a reason for wanting Luke to join him that we could tell)

With Anakin we saw why he fell to the dark side, even if the writing could have used a little work. He was always passionate, he was always proud and headstrong. His heart was in a good place and he wanted to prevent suffering. He was a poorly treated slave along with his mom, who was murdered and possibly raped by Tusken raiders. He wanted to prevent padmes death as it felt like too much after his mom’s. He wanted to rule to make things right and to prevent bad things.

The transition was a bit fast, but the cards were in place quite well.

And now Kylo.. we know nothing.. why is he willing to destroy the population of 3 planets? Why would he kill his own father? Why does he want to finish what Vader started, other than to become ‘moar evil’? There are no answers yet. It’s ridiculous.

Haha, I get the feeling he didn’t have much of a choice...

i do have a feeling that growing up rian jhonson never saw or never cared for star wars and saw them as an adult and didnt get them

No doubt

Huh? Did I miss something in the TLJ? Did Luke kill his nephew? Nope. He drew his light sabre but did not attack him. (Both during flashback and...) Hell he even had an out of body battle where all he did was slay him with his words and in doing so bought enough to time for the handful of resistance fighters the time they needed to escape.

Well he tried but Ben stopped him. Luke looked psychotic in this scene

Man that's exactly how I felt after seeing TLJ, "this guy doesn't get Star Wars" kept popping up in my head :lol

For sure. The execution wasn't perfect, but you truly get where Anakin is coming from. He can't stand the thought of losing Padmé after what he has been through. And obviously became a Jedi too late which made him a risk, according to their philosophy.
If I remember correctly (not sure if it's still canon), Sidious planted those visions of Padmé dying, to facilitate Anakin turning to him for help. Evil bastard.

Kylo is an emo kid who, after learning that his granddad was space Hitler, decided he is going to follow in his footsteps instead of sticking by his legendary uncle's side, after some sweet talking from an old stranger (Snoke).
It's not like his dad was a failure, sure he was a smuggler but he was also a legendary hero of the rebellion, and his mom was freakin' Leia.

Maybe it's more elaborate than that, but they aren't telling us.

Well he tried but Ben stopped him. Luke looked psychotic in this scene

In the final and third flashback (the 'real' one), Luke explained that he changed his mind about killing him but it was too late, Ben was awake and attacked him.

It's true. What is there positive to walk away with from TLJ?

Hope that you're a broom boy (or girl)? Why would you want to be one with the force? This movie says 'the old way is inconsequential', so who cares about the 'old ways'?

The OT was at its heart a story about the human spirit being triumphant over "The Evil Machine" -- it used many motifs to demonstrate this. Not sure what this new trilogy is saying at its core.

Yeah for the most part the interactions here have been very cordial I haven’t witnessed any rude behavior coming from the haters all their energy has been appropriately directed towards the actual movie but there has been some sporadic sexist and racist comments from some of them, ok fine maybe more than just sporadic, but whatever just say what you got to say and keep it moving forward.

Speaking for myself I can certainly be very sarcastic oh well.

My new years resolution is to be more like our president so my suggestion to you is to go to home depot and buy yourself some thick skin and while there ask them if they have any inner childhood wonderment left lol.

Happy new year guys!

Unfortunately TLJ will suck as hard in 2018 as it did in 2017 :(

Happy New Year!

May Solo be the greatest Star Wars movie of the new Disney era (probably not, but hey at least Infinity War should be awesome).
