State lawmaker wants tax on violent video games

With property taxes and water charges coming in in Ireland I'm beginning to ask why they don't just get it over with and tax EXISTANCE itself. And a tax for ''Not yet existing'' too.

So while the idea, to give more money to mental heath research is a sound idea, taxing something that isn't the problem is a terrible idea. Especially since Video Games are already expensive enough as it is....

but seriously I pay about 64 bucks on a brand new game. That is alot of money and I prefer not to pay something extra as little as it is because they "believe" this is what will help.

Also I don't see this getting bad, because I don't see anyone who would actually support this

I've seen this nonsense come around every few years since the original Mortal Kombat. It'll fade away as it always does. Americans have short memories. Some new tragedy will come along to distract us like babies having a shiny key ring jingled in front of us, and the school shooting and violent video games will become old news.

Ugh as a teacher there is a correlation. I don't know if a tax would be a good idea. However, it is a little chilling when an 11 year old tells you his favorite image is blood splatter and he wants to be Tony Montana or if he's making shooting gestures at other students because he just got Black Ops II and that's all he's thinking about.

The two shouldn't be linked in any way. Mental health services should be properly and adequately funded irrespective of revenue garnered from an unrelated source like violent video games.

Problem here is bad parenting. No parent should allow their children to be exposed to this stuff. That is why their is a rating on movies and games. Instead of blaming the games blame the parents for letting their children play something that is supposed to be restricted to 17+

Ahem, actually is a correlation between violent video games, television and movies. There have been many studies that prove that children who are exposed to violent images are more likely to have aggressive behavior.
Being on the front lines, I can tell you from personal experience that there is a correlation.

That there is the issue with games and kids. If parents would actually parent video games wouldn't be a problem.

Unfortunately, you bring up a truth there. I'm not saying violent video games and movies are the only thing but they are contributing factors.
The responsibility should rest with the parents, but then again not all parents raise their kids uniformly. Many man variables.
