Strange mystery item in Asmus "THE MASK" box? WTF?

Today I received an order from Asmus Toys. I recently ordered both "The Mask" and "Ace Ventura" from them (don't ask why, I fancied a few fun figures in the detolfs!).

When I opened the outer brown card box I found not only my Mask box but also a large bag of what looks like course granular modelers sand?

Has anyone any idea what or why this is?
At first I thought it was to weigh the package down, but that would cost them more to post. Has this happened to anyone else?

EDIT: MYSTERY SOLVED, The biggest bag of silica gel known to man. Doesn't make any sense to me, have a look below:

I thought the same thing... why.

I think it is kitty litter. I had a leaky car head gasket, and used the sand / kitty litter to clean up the oil in my garage.

I still wonder why... for package balance?

It is a desiccant. They have been included in clothing and shoe boxes like forever.

And also if you read the actual Mask thread you'd see Asmus himself already adressed this and apologized for the size of it, the next time it will be more reasonable.

I was assuming it was that as well... last few Sideshow figures I received had a bag of it, although it was labeled clearly

As Deckard said, they addressed this in the Mask thread. It's part of the packing material. I guess if you want to, open it up and use the sand in a diorama.
