Re: Stryker2011's: JABBA THRONE ROOM CUSTOM DIORAMA (WIP)

Here's another light test -- this time with 3 of the 5 lights that are going to be on the Carbonite wall. The overhead spot on Han, and the two "grate" systems. This is about as good as I can get any of them to look, but I think it looks okay despite not being entirely screen accurate. I'm waiting on more micro-spotlights, but they're coming from China, so it could be awhile before they get here unfortunately.

Here's another test with the last of the micro-lights that I had -- showing the orange glow I wanted to the side of frozen Han (don't have the extra light yet to be able to do the opposite side).

Love watching your progress and hearing about your decision making. :clap

Thanks. It's definitely been a learning experience, with a lot of trial and error. I started out with an overall "vision" in my head, and sort of worked things out as I went along. Stumbled a few times, and then altered my plans as I came upon issues that weren't easily solved. I've made basic furniture before, but I've never done anything like this -- and like a fool, I chose a massive project for my first attempt.

Go big or go home, I guess. :thud:

Re: Stryker2011's: JABBA THRONE ROOM CUSTOM DIORAMA (WIP)

I think the reason I’m so drawn to this project is because when I was a kid, my dad made a throne room for the Kenner Jabba out of wood. It had a trap door, Rancor cave and a spot for Han in carbonite. I’ll have to dig up the photos which would be at least 35 years old!

Thanks. I’m glad it resonates. I’ll bet that was awesome for a kid to have; by the time ROTJ came out, it had been years since I had collected the Kenner figures — so this is my rekindling that childhood feeling (in my 50s). :wink1:

It was awesome. All my friends were jealous.
I’m glad you’re getting so much joy out of your project. I think it’s important to have something that brings a child-like wonder to the everyday. Sharing that with others is even better.[emoji3]

Re: Stryker2011's: JABBA THRONE ROOM CUSTOM DIORAMA (WIP)

It's not entirely screen accurate for the carbonite display, but honestly I'm getting tired of messing with the lights. Here's 3 of the 5 lights mounted and the final result of the pattern they create (plus a shot of the "behind the scenes", or should I say "above the scenes"...):

The wedges help direct the light better thru the holes instead of the rays bouncing off the ceiling and dissipating. Those two lights on the posts are 6 1/4" above the ceiling.

Looks great. What mini spotlights are those? I might be able use some of those down the line.

Dude your lighting is just perfect!! So cool

Thanks, glad it looks okay. I have two more lights to add to get the orange effect around Han, and I’ve decided to switch out the 4 puck lights spaced across the main floor and Rancor pit grate for micro spotlights so the lighting is more uniform with the carbonite wall.

Re: Stryker2011's: JABBA THRONE ROOM CUSTOM DIORAMA (WIP)

More micro-spotlights arrived today. Here they are mostly set up, but I could use some advice. I bought the same kind of spots that I had for the Carbonite wall, and the cool thing about them is they have different brightness levels. Messing around with them a bit -- so it would be helpful if someone could chime in and let me know which looks better. (I also hooked up a couple of the other sets of lights, but those I'm not too concerned about).

Here are all the spotlights at 100%:

And here's the same lights -- Carbonite wall at 100%, and the overheads going across the floor at 50%.

Which looks better???

And here's a shot of the above mess of wires. Believe it or not the black cylinders I'm using for directional lights (and to help create the round spots on the "floor" are empty toilet paper rolls wrapped in black masking tape -- a resource everyone has access to. I still need to make a box for the final (orange) spot light above Frozen Han, and tape the rolls to the ceiling, but I have to paint the interior of the ceiling before I start gathering up the wires and taping everything down to make it all tidy.

Re: Stryker2011's: JABBA THRONE ROOM CUSTOM DIORAMA (WIP)

I’m liking the second lighting setup but also it’ll be harder to gauge since everything is still unpainted/white. There’s a significant bounce or reflection from that. Looking great!
