maybe a stuid question maybe not but here goes...........

why do some females get offended if you address them as ma'am?
i was taught from a young age to say ma'am & sir and i use it on a daily basis. i say either no matter the age of the person i'm speaking to (well not babies, that don't talk much & just drool) but some women/girls react like i called them something bad & i get an indignant look followed by a "MA'AM??".

soooooo.............is it insulting to some females & if it is, why?

This is why I prefer the word _____, or _____es if there's a group of them. :lecture:lecture:lecture:exactly:

Many years ago when I was in my early 20's I took this girl out to a nice restaurant and the waiter was about to take her order and said "And what would you like ma'am", and when he said "ma'am" she went plumb loco on this poor guy. Funny thing is she was a nice shy mousy type of girl who was very polite, but when he said that, she turned into an angry She-Hulk who wanted to rip this guys balls off. She said it made her feel like an old lady and "how dare he say that" and that he should have said "miss" instead. :cuckoo:

That's the way it used to be. Single, it's Miss. Married or older, Ma'am. If you're not sure, go with Miss. It's safer.

:lol

You're not from New England either. I bet in the spring when you see a five gallon bucket full of rain water, the first thing you think of is getting your fishin' pole.

Who knows. Mght be some fish in it.
