Ledger Joker basically gave Batman the old Gene Hackman/Lex Luthor Double-Jeopardy "you can't save both" challenge -- that's always a good stress-test on Superman. There's very little to challenge a true Superman with, psychologically. He shouldn't be so ego-based that he may give up helping people if they throw cans at his head. Isn't he above that? Doesn't he realize that humans are bad and good -- the point being, he has to rise to inspire our better angels? It's the reason I don't like Superman -- he can't really be bad and still be Superman. His "mistakes" come only from him not being 'super' enough, being weakened by kryptonite or being given a double-jeopardy challenge he can't win. He's the boy scout. He's Captain America. He must always be in the good. You 'break' Superman when you break his spirit... but we all know that truly can never be broken.

Can Superman ever really be a true 3-dimensional character?

I think so. He still has relationships and no doubt they carry a certain baggage given his secret and his power.

And then there's the brutal reality that for all of his power he can't save everyone, all the time. How does he grapple with that?

Besides -- Superman eventually became a DC demigod but in the beginning he couldn't even fly, if I'm remembering right.

You can write his powers anyway you want. Make him unbelievably fast and durable, sure ... but you *could* still build in some kind of limit. If you wanted to.

I think maybe that's what He Who Shall Not Be Named tried to do but it went too dark.

Then there's the idea that in a Superhero story we take certain unbelievable premises as axiomatic. So there's always good old suspension of disbelief in terms of the more thorny nuances, if the broad strokes of the story are entertaining and engaging enough.

I'm pretty sure, despite that look, I will care more about Gunn's Superman and Lois than I ever did for Snyder's.
Brosnahan can *act*. She has a lot of range and she's much more than just a pretty face. Amy Adams is no slouch but while I *accepted* her as Lois I didn't *believe* in her as Lois. I think Brosnahan is going to kill it, the way she can cycle from manic wisecracking to incredible depth.

As for our new Supes ... someone here pointed out that Cavill (and don't get me wrong, I think he made a great looking Superman) doesn't look *wholesome* and while I never thought of it that way, I have to agree. The new guy is more believable to me off the hop because he seems to carry an innocence around with him.

This is all based off a couple minutes of footage so I'm not married to any of it ... just some first impressions.

I so far don't have an issue with the trailer. No words were said except the kid and people chanting Superman. I'm sure once the full trailer drops we'll see what it's about. But Gunn said he took story elements from All-Star Superman. If we get to see a hopeful and endearing Superman then it will be fine. Whatever they setup in the future we'll see how it goes. The suit isn't my favorite design but I do hope it's changed near the end.

What's something good to watch with Brosnahan in it? I dunno if I've ever seen anything

I always thought Rebecca Hall would be a great Lois, but now probably getting too old

She played a very dark role in House of Cards; her character took time to develop but in hindsight had a great arc and it's startling how unrecognizable she was subsequently in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Both being TV series there was a lot of time for her to develop, but I've seen her do dark, tortured, manic, funny, charming ... a couple of different kinds of sexy ... contemporary, period ... she's got some chops.

It would never happen. A man who can fly would always amaze. A guy who could knock you to the moon would always intimidate. No one has the balls to throw a can at Superman's head.

Unless he lost his powers. Then the 'big men' show up.
Interesting point - although, sometimes people do lash out at 'safe targets' who they know won't retalliate, and Superman would sortof fit into that category

Finally watched the trailer, looks decent but I can already tell this will have too much/zany/hectic energy.
There is a LOT getting stuffed into this movie.
Hope it all works out, but I am not the biggest fan of Gunn's work - I think he is a bit overrated to be honest, but he does have some great character beats so I dont doubt that paired with a decent writer I will find myself liking these characters for the most part.
Most excited for Hoult as Luthor, looks great and he is an actor I always enjoy.
Never watched a Corenswet movie so I have yet to be sold on him, a part of me did the "we have x at home" meme and couldnt help but think of him as discount Henry Cavill, which isnt particularly fair of me - but its what I felt.

hoult had such bad luck with the Batman and renfield I felt bad for him, I hope this plays out well.
I heard that he took losing the batman really hard or something. and then renfield was completely flopped and was pretty bad.

Yeah even though they look fairly similar, Corenswet has much more of that small town, farmboy energy than Cavill ever did. And I'm sure that's the main quality Gunn was looking for with his Superman.

And the fact he's not showing off his muscles as much probably ties into that as well.
