I'm always curious about this: My wife and I have one three year old boy. When we had him, we saw about an extra thousand on our federal tax refund. However, it seems like people who aren't married(i.e. just a couple with a kid or two leaving together but not married) get several thousands. Is there a way for us to somehow increase our refund by claiming separately instead of together or something? Why are married couples seemingly beneifitting so much less than single parents from tax refunds? My wife and I aren't good with math so we usually let my mother do our taxes but she's been so busy lately, we're looking for a better(still very cheap or free if possible) option. Any suggestions?

Only one adult can claim the child, so unless they're both claiming them, which they aren't suppose to, then they should be getting the regular deduction.

There are a lot of tax companies online that do free federal taxes now.

Found this....

Ween is correct. Only one adult can claim a child.

Now, from experience, one year I did my taxes and I was getting substantially less than I did the year before. I looked into it and it turns out that I had entered the next tax bracket as a single filer. Decided right then and there to make an honest woman out of the baby momma. :rotfl

I kid, I kid. Plenty of other reasons...but that extra refund money was nice.

Refund??? Hell i have to pay the IRS $2000 because with my wifes income we made too much money and she didn't have enough taken out of her checks.. I am essentially paying her shortfall of Federal tax payments for the year. Needless to say i had her change her W2 to S-0.. If both you and your spouse work, whoever makes the most money should claim the M status and the dependents, the spouse with the smaller income needs to claim S-0 or they will not pay enough taxes.

How long does it take to get these through the mail? My boyfriend is still waiting for his. It's ridiculous.

You're dealing with one of the most corrupt and inefficient agencies in the federal government. They want you to get money back as much as they want to straddle a table saw. Customer service is not their goal. You are not a customer.

Yeah, it takes a long time to get a physical check back. Even if you file the old fashioned way (via paper), should you get a refund, elect to receive direct deposit.

Your boyfriend can go to Internal Revenue Service and input his info (SSN, expected refund amount) and he can see what stage his return is in.
